Get movin’!

Another fitness post? Well, what can we say? There’s always news to tell! Here goes:

Free Yoga – Sunday September 8

From 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Stephenson Park (south of Danforth, just west of Main) this Sunday, where Kevin McDonald (self-proclaimed “Leader of the Male Yoga Revolution”!) will be leading a free yoga session for anyone and everyone. It will be geared for people at moderate+ levels, but it’s a park, so if you are a beginner, I say go anyway! :)

What to bring: yoga mat or beach towel, comfy clothes that you can sweat in, water bottle, sense of fun! If it rains, the session will be cancelled. (Don’t judge, it’s totally legit to cancel if it rains!)

Bomb Wellness is moving October 1

And the best part is, they are moving eastward into a bigger space that happens to also be in DECA territory, closer to Coxwell Avenue! Read all about it in their blog post: http://www.bombwellness.com/2/post/2013/07/bigger-and-better.html They are a neighbourhood favourite so if you haven’t checked them out yet, please visit their website or facebook page for more info.

Do you want to come to the next DECA Board Meeting?

Okay fine, this one has nothing to do with fitness. Unlike fitness classes, DECA Board meetings are actually right up my alley – sitting, usually with a glass of wine in hand, laughing and learning with friends/neighbours while slowly making amazing changes in our community. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Maybe you won’t work up a sweat, but if coming to our Board meeting is of interest to you, please email Anita here for more information and details. The next one is this Thursday, September 5 @ 7:30 p.m and it will be held at one of our local, licensed establishments.

Family Day in the neighbourhood

Does this sound familiar?

The February long weekend has kind of snuck up on you, and something about calling it “Family Day” is making you feel like you need to make Monday something really special. But it’s February, and you’re tired, and you really just want to eat discounted Valentine’s Day chocolate that you are going to buy tomorrow on your lunch hour.

If you see yourself in this sad tale, then it’s DECAdiaries to the rescue.

Here is a list of neighbourhood Family Day activities!

Silly Goose Kids – 2054 Danforth Avenue (as if you don’t know where it is by now!)

Family Day

Monarch Park Stadium – 1 Hanson Street (behind Monarch Park School – in the dome!)

Pack some snacks and head over on foot if you can, since parking is very limited. Run those kids around and ensure a pleasant rest-of-the-day for the whole family!

Bomb Wellness – 1338 Danforth Avenue

A word from the owners:
We’re really excited about our family day line-up this year. We have classes running from 9:00 – noon for adults and children 10+ as well as playtime and Fit Kids for little people.
It’s just $10 to drop in, or $20 for the whole family. Unlimited members: this is totally free for you, and your family can participate for an additional $10.
In the afternoon, we’ll welcome David Dantes who will be teaching a 2 hour Self-Defense workshop. You won’t be learning any crazy knife-disarming drills, but you will learn realistic techniques to keep you safe, regardless of your size or strength. This course is suitable for men and women, as well as children over 10.
We’ll be airing a movie (free) downstairs if you’d like to bring your smaller children along while you participate in this course. The cost is $30 and $10 for additional members of the same family. ($25 for members, $20 for unlimited members)
Here’s the schedule:

Know any teenagers with time on their hands this month?

A couple of ideas for teenagers who might be looking for something to do in the next few weeks:

  • Madame Gateaux is running a baking camp from August 13-17 for youth aged 12-17 years, and there are still spots available. The cost is $275. (Think about all the value-add for your family to have your kid turn into a master baker by Labour Day!!)
  • BOMB Wellness is a Community Host for an initiative intended to combat youth inactivity.  As part of their commitment, they are offering 20 5-class passes for youth aged 14-19 for the month of August, for free! Our friend the East End Pioneer wrote about it in detail in a recent post.

Do you have any other ideas?  Please leave a comment!

S Sense in Design

Have you noticed that cute little store on Coxwell just north of Danforth. It’s called S Sense in Design and it is hosting the art of Mafalda Silva. The exhibition will be displayed from April 26th – June 27th.  S Sense in Design is at 698 Coxwell Avenue and is open Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m to 4 p.m.

Fuzz Box

Check out the East End Pioneer’s blog post on a new restaurant on the Danforth, The Fuzz Box (insert your own joke here). They specialize in a Nova Scotia donair. And if you don’t know what that is, then you better stop in and find out.

The Groove Bar

Speaking of restaurants, I took my little boys to the Groove Bar tonight for dinner. Yes, I took my young children to a bar for dinner.  Now, before you get all righteous and judgemental on me…actually I have no good excuse, you can feel free to be righteous and judgemental. Anyway, the food was good and Mama, the owner, was perfectly delightful. We played foosball and had a great time. So there.

Logical Consequences

It probably stands to reason that following the proliferation of bakeries would come the proliferation of gyms and exercise studios. You may already know that I pump iron at Legacy Studio, and there is also now Bomb Wellness and (coming soon) Tidal CrossFit – all on Danforth west of Coxwell. For those of you with babes in arms, you may want to try out Legacy’s Mommy and Me class on Mondays at 3:30 p.m. I hear it’s great fun and a great workout. For more info, contact Andy at info(at)legacyindoorcycling.com

Danforth Gem – Bomb Wellness

AARON HARRIS/FOR THE TORONTO STAR

The newest Danforth East fitness studio – Bomb Wellness – was recently featured in the Toronto Star. Here’s DECA’s very own Sarah Kiriliuk’s take on the newest business on the strip.

Running, spinning, weights….tired of the same old, same old workout? Get ready to breath some life into your fitness routine. Bomb Wellness,  at 1338 Danforth, is the new girl in town when it comes to getting healthy and she is no one-trick-pony. On my first visit to the space, I was giggling with delight at all the new calorie-burnin’ opportunities that owners Kevin and Victoria have on the schedule.

At first glance, visitors will notice a strange contraption with ropes and pulleys in the middle of the studio. Although it looks a bit intimidating if you’re not an olympian, don’t be afraid. It’s called the TRX system and it’s a revolutionary way to get that lean and lovely A-lister look by using a system of ropes and webbing to work against your own body weight.

At the back of the studio, what looks like stationary bikes from a distance are actually machines called Striders – a low impact workout similar to elliptical machines, but way cooler. Owner Victoria will take you through your paces during the three-to-four weekly classes and she means business! Your legs will feel like jelly afterwards.

The workout floor space provides enough room for the high-energy Zumba classes, or another innovation called the Slosh Pipe which is exactly as it sounds: a pipe filled with water that sloshes around and helps you with balance and stabilization. With a background in mixed martial arts, co-owner Kevin also offers classes called Fighting Fit, as well as some standard yoga and Pilates classes.

The best part about this studio is that it’s not a mega-corporation that is not invested in your personal fitness. The studio has a neighbourhood feel to it, and the owners care about each of their customers (such as shushing a fussy babe while one new mother rocks the Zumba beat).

We talk a lot about shopping local – but if you want to work off that cookie from the bakery, this is the local place to invest in your own personal wellness.
