I’m thankful, and I couldn’t think of a better place to introduce this book to my community.”

Danforth pop-up street makeover meeting on Thursday at Hirut!

Do you care about making the Danforth safer, more fun and useful for people of all ages (whether you are age 8 or 80 or anywhere in between)? We do too! That’s why DECA is so excited to be partnering with 8 80 Cities, Better Block, and the Danforth Mosaic BIA to create an exciting Danforth Pop-Up Street Makeover!

We’d love to have your input and ideas! Please join us for a presentation and community discussion on Thursday (tomorrow). You’ll meet some neighbours, the folks from 8 80 Cities and Better Blocks who are coming to make this amazing thing happen – and you won’t have to make dinner because Hirut is cooking for everyone. Drinks will be available for purchase.

Where: Hirut Restaurant, 2050 Danforth Ave.

What: Danforth Pop-up Street Makeover Discussion and Free Dinner!

When: Thursday, September 6 from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

If you can, please RSVP here, or just drop by!

Keen to lend a hand or know someone who might be?

We’ll also be needing some pop-up street makeover volunteers who can roll up their sleeves and lend a hand to re-design the street. We’ll be using temporary paint and materials, building and installing wikiblock furniture, and overseeing program activities for neighbours of all ages. The event and prep will take place October 4th – 6th. If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like to be involved, please email gay@deca.to for more information.

Community Meeting Sept 6

Preview of the 2015 Farmers’ Market

The East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market will be back for an 8th amazing year starting June 4th! We have some new farmers and vendors joining us this year and some returning favourites. The list of participants has been updated on the DECA website, but we have two new wineries and a few food vendors added to the roster, including a pizza vendor and a cookie maker!

Farmers Market 2015

The market will run for 20 weeks, from June 4 to October 15 with five larger events planned:

  • Grand Opening Celebration – June 11
  • Jammy Jazzfest – July 16
  • Movie in the Park – August 20
  • Applemania – September 17
  • Harvest Moon – October 8

Of course, each week will still be loaded with fun – facepainters, music, children’s games, storytimes and more! As well, local practitioners will be back each week to inspire you on living your best life at the market’s Wellness Booth. There will be everything from yoga, pilates and 3D movement to parenting and career coaching experts.

But, we still need more help! There’s different ways to get involved depending on your interests. The easiest way for many is to simply come and sit at the DECA booth for a few hours. Others get involved by cooking meals for the farmers. We could use some help designing posters for our events and we’re also looking for an eager high school student looking for 3-4 volunteer hours each week.  Send us a note at events(at)danfortheastcommunityassociation.com to find out more.

Volunteers needed – Gledhill Breakfast Club

Please read this message from Karen Ingham, Gledhill Breakfast Club Co-ordinator. This is such an important program for our community – hope you can help!

We have been overwhelmed by the financial support the Gledhill Community has offered this year. From proceeds from the movie night to a portion of sales of tickets to the Marlies. Go Gledhill!

However, the program needs are a combination of financial requirements and volunteers. We have had a substantial drop in volunteers over the last month. We need some more volunteers and I know there are some of you out there that can help this program continue.

We need one or two people to help clean up Tuesdays and Thursdays after breakfast. Working with one or two of the breakfast time volunteers, you can be out the door and off to the rest of your day by about 9:00 or 9:10. Come in after the second bell, help wipe tables and wash dishes (we even have a dishwasher), and be on your way, knowing you have helped with something good.

We also need a couple of more volunteers to help with breakfast prep and serve. You would start at 7:30, start putting away food at 8:40, and either help clean up or be on your way if we have clean-up crews.

These days we are often down to one person completing the whole morning routine. This is a huge concern, from an efficiency point of view to a safety point of view. The kids are great but really, we are outnumbered (in a good way). The concern is that if we don’t have more volunteers we will have to make some hard decisions, whether it is cutting back or cutting out the Breakfast Club. Please don’t let that happen.

If you can help, or know someone who can, please email me, kingham.gledhill@gmail.com. You have to have a current police check and be willing to pitch in and do whatever needs to be done to keep this going.

Karen Ingham, Breakfast Club Co-ordinator
