Something Old

Tintypes are back!

If you came to last year’s Danforth East Arts Fair, you likely noticed a photographer hiding under the hood of an old-timey camera to take portraits of other patrons. That’s Horst Herget, and he was creating tintypes right in East Lynn Park, developing the images on tin in just a few minutes and recreating an ancient art form in the process. Perhaps you caught his recent “Face the Danforth” show at Crema.

We’ve been getting questions about whether he’s returning on September 15 & 16. Lucky for you, the answer is yes. If you’re interested in having Horst take your picture, click here to drop him a line in advance, or stop by his booth in the northwest corner of the park.
Prices range from $45 to $75. You can even get your image framed right there in the park after Horst develops it. Doesn’t that make gift giving easy?

Something New
Have you noticed the store called Shoe Clearance on Danforth, just east of Monarch Park?
This is a clearance store associated with a shoe store with locations in Riverdale and the Beaches, with many prices discounted to far less than half the original. So our neighbourhood gets great quality shoes for adults, kids and babies at a fraction of the cost? Yay us! Open Tuesday to Saturday from 12 noon – 7 p.m.

You’re invited to the next DECA Board Meeting
The next DECA Board meeting is on September 11, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Are you a DECA member who would like to attend, or someone else with a reason to want to go? If so, we’d love to borrow you for an evening. We meet at a local licensed establishment, so think of it as a night out with neighbours rather than a “Board meeting” per se. If you would like more information, please email info@DanforthEastCommunityAssociation.com and someone will get back to you with more details.

Big week of changes along the Danforth

It’s been a big week on the east end of our stretch of the Danforth.

It was hard not to notice a big hole in the ground where the former “Glossy” building stood days ago at the south-west corner of Danforth and Patricia/Gledhill. Rumour has it that Honda bought the property and will use it as another lot.  We also have it on good authority that they will be adding some trees!

Many of us have heard by now that there was a fire last weekend at the shwarma place on the south side of Danforth (formerly “G-Spot” and “The Danny”).  CityNews reported that one person was treated at the scene.  It appears that the damage was pretty extensive so we are glad that nobody was seriously injured. We also hope that folks living above were not impacted.  Nothing has been reported about what caused the fire, and we have no news about what will happen next in the space.

The spot that housed “Runway Plus” on the north side of Danforth (across from Value Village) was vacant for only a few weeks before a Wind Mobile store popped up this week.  Not only are they open, the sign in their window says that they are hiring!

Last, but not least, The Thai Room has opened up on the south side of Danforth, just west of Woodbine. If you look closely at the picture, you will note the banner offering 25% off for take-out and eat-in, and 20% off for delivery.  Early reports are that the food is fresh, the people are nice, and the dining room is lovely.  What a great option on days when it is just too hot to cook, or on days that you’re too tired to cook, or on days that end in “y’…
On an unrelated note, we just wanted to thank our friends at Better Bulk for rescuing the Farmer’s Market sign left out on Thursday night.  Further proof that we live in a great neighbourhood!

Danforth Gems – Circus Coffee

I’ve been meaning to write about Circus Coffee for a while now.  I stopped in the other day and it’s a great little spot.  Lucky for me – and for you – Jordan Whitehouse at The Grid wrote about it for us. It’s at 7 Woodmount, beside Carter’s Ice Cream, kitty corner from East Lynn Park.

Woodmount Avenue is a little side street with young oaks running off the northeast corner of East Lynn Park. Although the sun is already falling over the street on this late fall day, an antique toy circus ring in the window of Circus Coffee House (7 Woodmount) is still lit up with afternoon rays. Inside the month-old espresso bar, owner Ron Duffy stands behind his late-’70s Gaggia coffee machine.  More….

Pumpkin Parade

The 2nd annual DECA Pumpkin Parade is Tuesday, November 1st from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.  Bring your pumpkins and bask in the spooooooky glow. Want to see more? Check out the pictures from last year’s event here.

Want to help out?  We need three people to help after the parade at 9:30 p.m. to move the pumpkins into the pool area and get them ready for the fantastic folks from the City of Toronto to pick them up the next morning. If you can spare 30 minutes or so, contact Anita  at anita.aks(at)gmail.com

Thanks!
