Danforth Reduces is a volunteer-lead initiative, bringing together shoppers and business owners who want to participate in reducing single-use packaging waste from their shopping and dining out experiences. Danforth Reduces will highlight business owners on our social media who display the BYO sticker in their window. The sticker is a symbol of their commitment to allow certain types of reusables to be used by their customers. Shoppers who want to make waste reduction a part of their lifestyle can easily choose businesses which support their choices. @Danforth_Reduces (IG) and email danforth.reduces@gmail.com

Thank you for coming out to the 11th Annual Danforth East Community Arts Fair … and what a fair it was! Rain or shine (and we had our share of both over the two-day event) the community spirit and amazing talent of our #DanforthEast neighbourhood was clear for all to see!
First and foremost we have to give a shout out to our volunteers! The fair, and DECA itself, would not be possible without the volunteers that bring it to life. Volunteers are the heart and soul of all that DECA has accomplished over its 12-plus years, and remain vital to the continued growth and development of our community.
Look at this amazing organizing committee!

#DanforthEast lost a true community minded artist earlier this year when Tracey, who co-owned Silly Goose Kids with her partner Shamie, passed away after a long and difficult battle with breast cancer at the age of 51. As many in our community know, Tracey didn’t just co- own and operate the best toy store ever (!) she was a creative force who never stopped giving to our community. Tracey spent countless hours volunteering at the Arts Fair and our weekly Farmers’ Market, opened the doors of her store to help innumerable volunteer operations as a drop off location and, of course, always created the most magical and educational window displays that inspired a whole street to dream big. This year we were honoured to have Tracey’s partner Shamie help us present the inaugural Tracey Jacobs Best in Show award to Gotamago, a fabulous local shop that specializes in original watercolour and ink illustrations designed and printed in Toronto.

Best New Artist Award PottsieCo. and her beautiful Kimonos! A close contender for the People’s Choice award, this was this artisans first show! We feel like there will be many more to come!
Best in Fine Art Award Dave Rheaume and his beautiful vintage urban scenes!

Best Artisan Award Alexander Kastulin (Akart) and all his delicate and intricate work in the language of ceramics!

As always, DECA is always looking for volunteers to help run our events and to bring to life new and exciting ideas! Membership in DECA is only $10 annually/family and helps us run events throughout the year. For any questions, email:info@deca.to.
Coming Soon: Federal Election Candidates Meeting, Beaches-East York Riding: Date tbd – further details coming soon! Public Board Meeting: Oct 22 @ The Workaround, 2080 Danforth Ave, from 7-9pm Festival of Lights: Saturday, Nov 30 in East Lynn Park from 4-5pm
It’s time to stock up on those kid-friendly veggies and fruits (green beans and blueberries anyone?) and some good ready-made meals (pies, soups, donuts big enough for a breakfast!) for the busy fall ahead. While you’re at the market this Thursday, check out our guests!
Community Wellness Booth: GO Sauna will be on hand to show off their sauna tent. Here’s what they say about their business:
“We’re a little sauna tent that temporarily resides in community places. You can sauna with us wherever we are: at the beach, on a back patio, in the woods…essentially, somewhere outside.
The beauty of a sauna tent is you can literally sauna with us anywhere!”
Kids’ Tent: PlayPass is back with a crafts and colouring table. They say:
“We’re PlayPass, a new website that helps parents discover, book, and save money on local kid activities! We’ve partnered with over 25 local children’s activity providers in the East End (Create Art Studio, Fresh Paint, Little Robot Friends to name a few near East Lynn Park) who list their activities on our platform for parents to book.”
This weekend, DECA is so very excited about Canada’s first ever Vision Zero Popup Street Makeover!
As we wrote in our August 2 post, on Friday August 23rd at 5pm until Saturday August 24th at 3pm this Pop-up Event will reimagine the Danforth from Woodbine Avenue to Woodmount Avenue into a safer, more vibrant block in the city, using simple materials and with the help of volunteers.
Planned and organized by 8 80 Cities and The Better Block Foundation with support from DECA, the Danforth Mosaic BIA, Councillor Brad Bradford and The Workaround, this fun event is designed to engage everyone in the possibilities for creating city streets that are more liveable and walkable for our communities.
“From August 23rd – 24th one block of Danforth Avenue will be transformed into a street that exemplifies the City of Toronto’s aspiration to get traffic fatalities down to zero. With temporary paint, and simple materials we will show that community can come together to build solutions for safer and more vibrant streets. The street will include expanded pedestrian space, protected bike lanes, parklets, street furniture, and community programming for all ages.
The pop-up street makeover will take place over 2 days on one block from Woodbine Ave to Woodmount Ave. This will be the first pop-up street makeover of its kind in Toronto, bringing internationally renowned tactical urbanists The Better Block Foundation to Canada for the first time.”
