Local Canada Day events!

Canada Flag

Canada Day is a few days away and you should know about these amazing local events!

Of course, the annual East York Canada Day celebration (including a parade, music, midway and fireworks) will once again take place at Stan Wadlow Park. Check out the website for details on the parade route and music lineup: www.julyfirstparade.com

The amazing group of neighbours over by Stephenson Park have put together a great event that we all should try to attend!  Join them for acoustic music from 3:00-9:00pm along with watermelon, cake and lemonade. (If you haven’t been to Stephenson Park, you really should put this on your summer to-do list.) Note – wading pools are open so come prepared!

Do you know that our BIA is once again putting on concerts at East Lynn Park every Wednesday in July?  The series this year is called The Danny Loves Music.

For Canada Day, we can all go rock out to the Spoons. Yes, THE SPOONS (Here is the link to the video for Romantic Traffic, which anyone who lived in Toronto in the 1980s will especially appreciate!).

A lot of people think that DECA organizes this concert series so we’ll say it as many times as possible that full credit goes the Danforth Mosaic BIA, who recently rebranded as “The Danny”. Click here to check out their awesome new website.

Pssst – rumour has it the beer garden will be back!

Show your appreciation to the BIA for these concerts by supporting their members. Shop on the Danforth as much as you can! Summers can be slow for our local shop owners, so try to make a special effort to wander in and make a purchase or two.

Happy Canada Day, neighbours!

Family Day in the ‘hood

A few events that you should know about!

Skating Party and Bonfire, Sunday February 15, 2:00-8:00pm

An amazing group of neighbours have come together to make a natural rink at Stephenson Park (just behind Sobey’s near Main & Danforth) and now these local heros are having a skating party and bonfire for the community. People have been baking and planning and it’s all shaking down on Sunday from 2-8pm. You know all those reasons why you love this neighbourhood? Well, this is all of them.

Free Yoga – Sunday September 8

From 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Stephenson Park (south of Danforth, just west of Main) this Sunday, where Kevin McDonald (self-proclaimed “Leader of the Male Yoga Revolution”!) will be leading a free yoga session for anyone and everyone. It will be geared for people at moderate+ levels, but it’s a park, so if you are a beginner, I say go anyway! :)

What to bring: yoga mat or beach towel, comfy clothes that you can sweat in, water bottle, sense of fun! If it rains, the session will be cancelled. (Don’t judge, it’s totally legit to cancel if it rains!)

Bomb Wellness is moving October 1

And the best part is, they are moving eastward into a bigger space that happens to also be in DECA territory, closer to Coxwell Avenue! Read all about it in their blog post: http://www.bombwellness.com/2/post/2013/07/bigger-and-better.html They are a neighbourhood favourite so if you haven’t checked them out yet, please visit their website or facebook page for more info.

Do you want to come to the next DECA Board Meeting?

Okay fine, this one has nothing to do with fitness. Unlike fitness classes, DECA Board meetings are actually right up my alley – sitting, usually with a glass of wine in hand, laughing and learning with friends/neighbours while slowly making amazing changes in our community. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Maybe you won’t work up a sweat, but if coming to our Board meeting is of interest to you, please email Anita here for more information and details. The next one is this Thursday, September 5 @ 7:30 p.m and it will be held at one of our local, licensed establishments.

Ultimate Frisbee at Stephenson Park! (Main & Danforth Aves)

A word from a local business we just heard from:

Our business is called REC Athletics, we organize and facilitate adult recreational level sports leagues. We are starting out our 2013 season with an Ultimate Frisbee league, operating on Wednesday nights @ Stephenson Park. The spring season will commence on May 15, 2013 running until end of June, with a skills workshop, and scrimmage being held on May 5, 2013. Our summer season will begin early July, running through until the end of August. We are also working with the city on some plans to include a fall season that would operate through September and October.

Registrations are happening quickly, but we still have several spots remaining for both team, and individual registrants. People can visit our website (www.recatheltics.com) for more information or to register! We will be launching a new website June 1st, this will better serve our customers and our business with a more efficient registration and payment system. Also people are encouraged to visit and “Like” our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/RecAthletics) to remain updated with all the happenings REC Athletics!
