We have posted a lot about new businesses in the neighbourhood, but this post is exciting news about a some of the business that have been around for a while.

Our more established businesses are so valuable to our neighbourhood – where would we be had they not taken a chance on our end of town, back in the day?

Manzer Hair Studio asked us to let you know that they’ve moved to a new location! You can find Nicole, Rachel and Hannah working out of a gorgeous new space west of Woodbine at 1993 Danforth, formerly Nippon Video.

On October 6, you are invited to drop in for their grand opening to see the new space. Here’s a sneak peek:

Sugarmoon Salon

Happy Birthday to Sugermoon, 1509 Danforth + two other locations! They are 14 years young and to celebrate they are offering 14% of products and services!

Pegasus Studios

It is hard to believe but Pegasus Studios (361 Glebeholme Blvd) is turning 30 this year. This family-run dance school is such a special place for people of any age who want to dance, create & move.

Happy 30th to Pegasus!! Here’s to the next 30 years and beyond.

Melanie’s Bistro

Do you have the September blues? A night out at Melanie’s (1870 Danforth) will help. Delicious food, you can bring your own wine every day – free corkage on Wednesdays! – and since Melanie is a pastry chef, the desserts will never disappoint. If dinner isn’t your thing, visit them for lunch and weekend brunches!

Festival of Lights: Pictures & Thank You!

A HUGE thank you to Angela Matich and her crew of volunteers for putting together Nov. 29th’s wonderful Festival of Lights. Thanks too to the approximately 1000 (!) of you who came out to East Lynn Park to help celebrate the season and light up the park Danforth East-style! The amazing turnout blew our estimates out of the water, so the hundreds of loots bags (courtesty of Art Cave, Kids Fun Town, Oaks & Acorns, Pegasus Studio & Silly Goose Kids–be sure to check out Silly Goose’s author event with Helaine Becker this Sunday at 10:30. Free cider!) went mighty quickly. So did the 300 cups of delicious hot chocolate donated by Melanie’s Bistro and the yummy treats provided by Celena’s Bakery. Next year we’ll have more supplies on hand so no one goes empty-handed.

Thank you to the Pegasus Studio Dancers, the East End Music Project Choir for entertaining us, and to Show Pro for the sound equipment. The Zero Gravity Circus Fire Artist and LED Hula Hooper lit up the night spectacularly.

A big special thanks to our key sponsors who made this event happen: Sugarmoon (Catch their open house tomorrow, Dec. 10, 11-8pm!) and Corinne McCabe – Bosley Real Estate Broker.

The Market This Week & BIA Wants to Hear from YOU

East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market:

Local Deal Alert: Melanie’s Bistro is waiving the corkage fee on B.Y.O.W on Thursday’s. All you have to do is buy your wine from the market and purchase an entree. What a wonderful idea!

Visit the Community Booth this week where realtor advocate, Deb Dorsey, shares the value of our neighbourhood, providing sales statistics for each street. She’ll be offering tips on a home tune-up and what needs to be done to prepare it for sale, in order to achieve the best return on your investment.

The Wellness Booth this week will be Ankh Yoga & Origin Wellness.

The East Lynn Farmers’ Market runs every Thursday from 3-7:00 p.m. between June 5 – October 9 at East Lynn Park, located on the south side of Danforth Ave, just west of Woodbine Ave. Stay up to date by visiting the East Lynn Market Facebook page.

Danforth Mosaic BIA Looking for Input

The Danforth Mosaic BIA marketing committee wants your help! Participate in a one hour workshop on Thursday, Sept 11, 7pm @ Red Rocket Coffee to help define what makes our hood special. Refreshments will be served. More information on attached poster, including RSVP details.

#DEdreams in Pictures

A huge, big thank you to everyone for coming out and making last week’s Danforth East Dreams event such a fun and successful day!

Over 400 (!) of you joined us to share what you love about the ‘hood and your dreams about how we can make it even better. There were tons of great ideas, including:

starting a community garden (Attention those of you who loved this idea: good news is coming soon!)
a neighbourhood wide golf tournament in which everyone sets up a hole on their lawn
bringing back monarch butterflies to Monarch Park
bike lanes on Danforth
converting the TTC buildings at Coxwell (South side of Danforth) into a public space with a park, stores and housing
rabbits (the young lady didn’t elaborate on her vision, but rabbits are indeed pretty cool all on their own)

We even spied an idea that looked an awful lot like a marriage proposal (possibly a DECA first?). We’ll continue collecting all the ideas and share the full results in the next few weeks. Until then, have a look at the fantastic pictures taken by Bruce, Tina and Casey. See if you spot your idea or recognize someone you know posing with their dream.

Let’s Party! Save the date: April 12

It’s been a long winter. Power outages, Polar Vortex, snow, the return of the Polar Vortex, and even more snow. If there was ever a Spring to celebrate, this is it. So save the date for Saturday, April 12, 12-4 pm, 1811 Danforth, because we’re inviting you to kick off your Sorrels and get together with your neighbours to party.

We’re calling it Danforth East Dreams. We were so inspired by #DreamPopup survey response, we decided to up our game and go even bigger. What do you want to see next for DE? A co-work space? Community gardens? Ping pong in the park? And we know dreams are a good place to start because the Farmer’s Market, Arts Fair, Pumkin Parade, Pop-up Shops, Adopt- a-Tree and Yard Sale (or a community association) all began as someone’s big idea.

Come out and tell us. Or show us. Because this isn’t a meeting: it’s a party. We’re going to have all kinds of fun, interactive ways to share your ideas. Put your house and ideas up on the giant map of the hood, Neighbourland (apologies to Candy Chang); pin your dreams to our clothesline; get interviewed by roving kid-reporters; build your dream with the crafty Mrs. Darling (of Mrs. Darling’s Imaginarium for Boys & Girls fame); get your bike tuned up for spring by the folks from 32 Spokes; or just come and hang out and be inspired.

Besides all the free activities, we’ve also got free snacks and drinks to fuel your creative energy–popcorn courtesy of Moberly Natural Foods; java and treats from Melanie’s Bistro; beer from family-run, DIY-ers Beau’s.

But that’s not all.

Right next door, at 1803 Danforth, from 11-3 pm, Toronto’s Repair Cafe is partnering with the Tool Library and offering you free repairs of your broken stuff! The volunteer-run organization is committed to giving people the confidence to fix your things instead of making them landfill fodder. They’ll have fixers available for computers and other electronics, small appliances and furniture, and clothing and more. Our current pop-up shop, Veritus Pictures, will also be open for business– take a stroll through his gallery and find out about his fabulous workshops.

So start dreaming about the hood and tweet your ideas with #DEdreams to get us started.
