DECA news and updates

We are so often sending out info about other events going on, but here are a few DECA events and updates to tell you about!

#DanforthEast Garage Sale – June 7

It’s not too late to sign up for the great #DanforthEast Garage Sale!

The community-wide garage sale happens Saturday, June 7, 8-2, rain or shine and after last year’s success, we are looking forward to an even bigger turnout this year!  Send us an email by clicking here to add your address to our list/map.

Why join this sale? Well, we will do all the advertising and can arrange for your leftovers to be picked up – so your two most irritating garage sale “to do”s are taken care of. All you have to do is empty your clutter onto you lawn and be willing to bargain.

If you’re not selling that day, make sure to mark the day down anyway and plan to stroll around for good deals.  It’s a great way to meet your neighbours!

East Lynn Farmers’ Market – June 5

The market starts June 5! That is only two weeks away – just long enough for you to dig out your picnic blankets and get out the sun hats. While the experience is what makes it so special, please remember that the market can’t happen if we don’t show up and buy stuff from the farmers, so adjust your budget and set aside a bit of cash for the freshest, yummiest most wonderful locally grown/produced food that you could ever want.

Danforth East Dreams (#DEDreams) Follow-Up

Thank you to Annette and Max for putting together the final piece we have to share from April’s Danforth East Dreams event. Check out the summary of everyone’s dreams for the hood!

You can also find everyone’s individual dreams mapped by Kim and pictures of the day. Take a look and be inspired to make one of these dreams into a reality. http://danfortheastcommunityassociation.com/danforth-east-dreams

Dance Mob Follow-Up!

DECA, Pegasus Studios and the Danforth East community came together on Sunday May 4th to celebrate Dance Day! We danced in the streets in our bright blue t-shirts.

Did you see us there were almost 90 of us? First we joined Art of the Danforth in Robertson Parkette and then we joined the Walk group at Greenwood and Danforth. We had the most fun dancing and laughing together. We want to say THANK YOU to the community for helping us create a neighbourhood where we can have this much fun!

We are incredibly grateful to all our sponsors for your help in getting this event happening and for outfitting the dancers in amazing t-shirts!

LEN: Democratic Purveyors of Fine Art and Beautiful Things,
FlyGirl Fitness,
Ages & Stages,
Oaks ‘n Acorns,
Dianna Kennedy from Remax Hallmark,
Counterbalance Studio Pilates,
Pose Hair Design,
The Canine Social Company

And what would a Dance Mob be without dancers! We had so much fun dancing with everyone who participated. Thank you for joining us and putting your dance shoes on to bring us all together.  If you want to see it for yourself, here is a video and photos:

Saying Goodbye & THANK YOU to our Farmers!

So long, farewell…

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to put on the East Lynn Farmers’ Market, here is how our stats for the season break down:

  • 17 market weeks with 85 total hours of vending (farmers standing on their feet with a long drive to and from Toronto before and after)
  • 600 warm meals made with love from 23 of your neighbours to feed the farmers, who otherwise wouldn’t get to eat dinner on Thursday evenings
  • 212 hours donated by dedicated DECA volunteers (including many by ‘Farmerlicious Femme’ Alison McMurray)
  • 16 different groups set up at our Community Table to spread the word about their organization
  • 425 little faces painted by Rebecca and Renee and their team of student volunteers
  • 24 hours donated leading crafts, singing, dancing from our friends at Mrs. Darlings Imaginarium, Silly Goose Kids, Pegasus Studios, Oaks n’ Acorns, Career Fit Mom, Silver Spirit Karate and Sprout Kids

That’s a whole lot of giving from our community!

Why do we do it? Clearly, because of all that the farmers give to us. They give us countless early mornings picking and packaging fruit and veggies, weekends spent turning sap into syrup, late nights making berries into jams and hours raising beautiful animals into healthy, locally raised meat. They also give us the precious time it takes them to drive, set up, and unpack at the park each week, and then to drive home after a long afternoon and evening of work. While we picnic, splash, chase and chat on long, wonderful evenings, the farmers are there too, working, making the whole thing happen for us.

I know that I speak for many when I say, a great big “THANK YOU!” to the farmers!

Make sure to come to the market this Thursday, and while you’re stocking up for the week, buy a few things for your freezer, and take a moment to say thank you and farewell to this year’s farmers.

‘Tis the Season for Ontario Produce & Pop Up News

Farmers’ Market: ‘Tis the Season for Ontario Produce

It’s late August which means one thing.  Basically everything is in season.  I’m not talking faux floral prints or modern stripes.  I’m talking peaches, tomatoes and basically all the best Ontario fruit and vegetables.  Check out Foodland Ontario’s chart of what’s in season.  Pretty much everything is in season right now except asparagus.  Now is the time to get out and support our farmers!

Fresh, juicy Ontario peaches!

First Market at East Lynn Park – This Thursday!

Farmers’ market starts this week!

It’s time to welcome back our favourite crop of farmers!  The East Lynn Farmers’ Market opens this Thursday, June 6th.  That’s the “when”, now we will answer the what, who, how, and why…

What’s on this week at the Market?

At the Kids’ Korner this week, we’ll have the face-painters starting at 4:00 p.m..  Our friends from Silly Goose Kids will be at the park from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and we hear that they might have some storytelling and other fun planned!  New this year will be the BINGO Scavenger Hunt were kids get to learn about what veggies are in season each week for a chance to win $5.00 in ‘market bucks’. Visit the folks at the Kids’ Korner for more details (they’re the ones under the red tent).

Who puts on this market?

DECA works with MyMarket to put on the market each week.  DECA looks after events, volunteers and some of the marketing while MyMarket takes care of the farmers.  MyMarket certifies that the farmers at our market sell only what they produce.   Their mission is to build community through connecting real farmers to the urban marketplace, which we think is ideal!

How can you get involved?

First and foremost, come to the market and buy food from our farmers!!

Some volunteer opportunities are still available so if you want to know more, here is our post about volunteering from April.

We’re also looking for some photos of the market.  Each week we’ll profile the pictures you submit on this Blog and our Facebook page.  Toward end of the season we’ll have an online contest were people can vote for the photo that best captures the essence of the market.  Prizes to be announced later in the season!  Email submissions by clicking here. (If you are sending photos of people, please make sure you have their permission, particularly kids!)

Why is the Grand Opening next week?

We need a week to get up and running before we roll out the red carpet to really kick off the season.  Stay tuned for more details on the Grand Opening Celebration taking place next week (June 13, 2013).

The East Lynn Farmer’s Market runs every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. between June 6 – October 17 at East Lynn Park, located on the south side of Danforth Ave, just west of Woodbine Ave.
