DECA: the year in review

In the year since last spring’s AGM, DECA has been busy! 2022 was a year of cautiously joyful returns to our pre-pandemic activities, which we will tell you about here, in advance of our AGM on April 3 at Hirut. Speaking of, have you registered yet? Click here: AGM RSVP

June

On June 11, the Danforth East Yard Sale came back with an impressive 206 households signing up and putting their flag on the map!

June-October
Over the summer, DECA along with Farmers’ Market Ontario, hosted the East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market. On Thursdays, booths were filled with fresh farm produce, local vendors, and breweries accompanied by live music, rotating community organizations and children’s activities. We welcomed the Kidpreneurs program, which the community enthusiastically supported.
September
In September the Danforth East Arts Fair brought us talented artists, live entertainment, community dance studio performances and more great food.

October

In October, we organized a municipal all-candidates debate and an engaged community filled the venue.

November

The first night of November always begins with the Pumpkin Parade! Hundreds of pumpkins lined the path at East Lynn while neighbours chatted and kids enjoyed late-night playground privileges!

December

Our annual Festival of Lights returned with Shannon Butcher leading a singalong in the park and Community Fridges collecting food donations.

February

Some of our DECA board members and community members walked the Coldest Night and raised funds in support of Kennedy House Youth Shelter.

DECA is run by a dedicated volunteer board. We meet regularly and are excited about what’s to come. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at our AGM on April 3!

Guiding Principles:

  • We are inclusive and respectful of our diverse communities;
  • We strive to make our community safe for everyone;
  • We make efforts to participate in planning that affects this community;
  • We encourage revitalization that values inclusivity, diversity and environmental responsibility
  • We will be a responsive, credible and representative voice for the community;
  • We work to protect the natural beauty of the neighbourhood; and,
  • We will facilitate the dissemination of important information to the community.

Here is the press release from Kennedy House:

Kennedy House staff, friends and family are walking to raise awareness and funds for youth experiencing homelessness

(February 7, 2023) Toronto, ON – On Saturday, February 25, 2023, staff, family and friends of
Kennedy House will be raising money for programs and services by walking in the Coldest Night
of the Year. This is the 7 th annual Kennedy House CNOY event and it will be hosted on the
Danforth, Toronto at 4pm. This fundraiser, held in more than 130 communities nationwide,
aims to raise funds and awareness for programs and services that support populations
experiencing homelessness, or at-risk of experiencing homelessness. Kennedy House walkers
and teams will be walking 2 or 5km to support the Kennedy House youth programs.

Together, we will brave the cold and walk with family and friends as advocates for youth who
not only need our support, but deserve it. We want to see leaders come out of this community
and show the next generation that forging a positive path can be done.
