Self Defence

DECA Learns – Self Defence

Rachel Jolicoeur is taking on the helm of DECA’s safety committee this year.  The first thing she has organized is a self defence class, courtesy of DragonZ Martial Arts Centre.  Sir Marvin Prashad will provide this two hour class on Sunday, April 3rd from 1-3 p.m. It will include a warm up, situation enactment, proper technique and a fitness component.  DragonZ is at 1998 Danforth, just west of Woodbine.  Those interested can RSVP to rachel.jolicoeur(at)yahoo.ca. The cost is $5 or pay what you can.

Also, if you’re interested in being part of our new safety committee (it took a short hiatus for a while), also send a note to Rachel.

Little Ethiopia

On the one hand, Eye Weekly ran a story this week about Samuel Gettachew’s campaign to name the area around Monarch Park and Danforth, Little Ethiopia.  On the other hand, the large Ethiopian centre on the northwest corner of Danforth and Woodbine is for lease.  When the federal government cut funding to immigrant agencies in late 2010, this group lost a big chunk of its funding and will now consolidate its services in its west-end location.

Beaches Easter Parade

Would you like to help us promote the East Lynn Farmers’ Market and be in the Beaches Easter Parade on Sunday, April 24th?  We’re putting a group together.  You can dress up as a farmers or some sort of local food…a tractor…let your imagination run wild.  Children are welcome too of course!  If you’re interested contact Shelley at  shelleydarling(at)yahoo.ca

Monarch Park students going to Kenya

A group of students from Monarch Park C.I. are heading to Kenya on April 26th as part of  a four-credit special program that includes a one-month co-op placement building a school in Kenya with the organization Free the Children.  Monarch Park is the only school in Canada to offer the program. Flower Boxes

A few people have asked me about the flower displays that the BIA has been putting into the tree boxes on the Danforth for the last few years.  I understand that the BIA has a significantly lower budget this year and therefore won’t be doing the flowers this year.

Not Quite Last Minute Gifts

Give the gift of local food, strong community and general neighbourliness by making your way to Caketown Cafe and picking up some East Lynn Farmers’ Market Bucks. It’s the perfect gift for neighbours or nannies or foodies or as a most well-received  hostess gift.  Caketown Cafe is just west of Woodbine on the south side of Danforth (beside the big hole).

If you’re worried about where all this holiday eating is getting you, you might want to check out CareerFitmom.   This is a local business serving mostly moms and babies but also provides women’s-only fitness.  The next session starts January 10th, but if you register before Dec. 27th, it’s only $85 for six weeks.  Classes are at Cosburn and Woodbine.

CareerFitmom is owned by Beth Yarzab and Beth is teaching a fitness instructor certification course between Christmas and New Year’s.  Teaching fitness is a great, flexible job so if you are interested in knowing more, contact Beth at beth(at)careerfitmom.ca

Full Bellies and Warm Hearts

Every year, among many other things, Catherine Porter, organizes generous community volunteers to cook dinner for the farmers and their helpers at the East Lynn Farmers Market.  She sent along this note of thanks.

The last farmers’ market this year was cold and damp.  The farmers had dwindled down to 14, selling apples and honey and what’s left of the broccoli and lamb. But, at 5:15 p.m. they shovelled in warm bangers and mash and were, as usual, very grateful. I handed a steaming plate to a new farmer, who arrived to the market for the first time with Ruth’s cheese. He was bewildered.

“What is this?” he said. “Our community is grateful you are here. So, we feed you every Thursday so you leave with big, warm bellies,” I answered.

He beamed at me.

It was another great moment of many this summer.

Every Thursday — rain or shine — when you are rushing home, someone is rushing out to the farmers’ market not to pick up supplies (although, maybe that too), but to bring each of them a homemade meal.

Some people cooked once, which was fabulous. Others cooked twice and three times, which was mind-boggling. And every Thursday, the farmers said how grateful they were for the generosity and kindness.

As I’ve said many times here before, the farmers feed us, and we feed the farmers. They have helped make our little pocket of the city more of a community, and we in turn, want to include them in that feeling.

It’s a lot of work, for very little pay. But it was very much appreciated.

So, please, thank with me the following cooks, who arrived on a Thursday with every thing from Morroccan chicken curry to lasagna:

Susan Spratley, Nicola St. John, Susan Cox, Susi Tarleton, Pat Chartier, Kirsten Hurd, Shelley Pogue, Mary Egan, Sara Heinonen, Nicola Yap, Robin Forbes, Susan Crofts, Frances Bartlett, Tanya Geisler, Jessi Schmiedchen, Laurie Smith, Catherine Dorton, Ruth Heathcote, Lorraine Cheng, Alisha Austin, Wayne Chee, Melissa Peritti, and Alison McMurray.

If you want to join us and cook one night — or many — next summer, please let me know: catherine_porter@rogers.com

Last Chance Market Day + Mary-Margaret McMahon

East Lynn Farmers’ Market

Thursday is the last day of the 2010 East Lynn Farmers’ Market.  What an amazing season this has been.  Nearly every Thursday was blessed with beautiful weather and we had a terrific slate of farmers this year.  Whether you were looking for meat, bread, cheese, fruit or vegetables, it was all there to be had.  We also had fun family activities at 4:30 p.m. all summer long and great music too.

Who Is That Lady In The Pea Costume?

If I’m really being honest here, there was a little part of me that was kind of hoping Mary-Margaret McMahon wouldn’t win as Ward 32 Councillor on Monday night.  It was completely and totally selfish.  You see,  a whole lot of what DECA has achieved over the last three or four years is because of, or has been helped along by Mary-Margaret: whether it was getting trees planted or surveying the tree canopy or organizing the DECA Learns series of re-skilling workshops or helping organize the the DECA Bikes team, or as an ever-energetic member-at-large on the executive committee and of course, as one of the pillars of the East Lynn Farmers’ Market.

Well, we couldn’t let her leave without a little hurrah – so please join us tomorrow at the East Lynn Farmers’ Market at 5:30 p.m. where we’ll raise a metaphorical glass to the wacky lady in the pea suit who’s undeniable energy has helped make the market and our community a much more vibrant place to live.

The. Final. Two. Weeks.

It’s the last two weeks of the East Lynn Farmers’ Market.  When other markets are long since closed, you can count on us to keep bringing you fresh, local produce with finesse and flare right to the end of October.  You’ve only got two more weeks to get your honey and your bread and your cheese and fill your freezer with farm-fresh produce.  You’ll thank me in February when you’re eating tomato sauce that you made in October.  I’m just sayin’…

Pumpkin Parade

The pumpkin parade will happen from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. on Monday, November 1st. You can bring your pumpkins to East Lynn Park as early 5:30 p.m.  You may want to bring your pumpkin a little earlier and come a little later if you can swing it, but even if you come at 8 p.m. bring your pumpkin with you.  It’s all good.  And hey – tell all your friends.  It’s going to be super cool.  And – we could still use an extra hand or two.  If you can help, let me know.
