Come to our volunteer orientation dinner for yard sale + farmers’ market!

May and June are busy times for DECA folks as we gear up for the East Lynn Farmers’ Market (starting Thursday, June 1) and the Danforth East Yard Sale (Saturday, June 10).

Volunteer Orientation Dinner

Both of the market and the yard sale require lots of people to make them a success. This year, we thought we’d start volunteer season with an orientation dinner at Hirut Ethiopian Restaurant on Monday, May 29 at 630 pm. The dinner will consist of a vegetarian buffet and cash bar, and you’ll have a chance to meet with other volunteers and hear more about these events. (PS kids are always welcome!) RSVP here to come to the volunteer orientation dinner: https://forms.gle/aoTJhstZVwbn9HEK9

Yard Sale Volunteers

This year, we are adding a multi-seller sale and a clothing/small appliance drive to benefit Kennedy House Youth Shelter and New Circles. We’ll need people to help with set up and sorting (and even delivering donations). You can sign up now or wait to learn more at the dinner.

Farmers’ Market Volunteers

The market runs every Thursday 3-7, June 1 to October 12. This year we are adding a local business pop-up booth, glitter tattoos for the kids, and all kinds of community and kid activities. If you or your teen are interested, you can sign up now or wait to learn more at the dinner.

2023 DECA Board and AGM Minutes

Thank you to everyone who came to our AGM on May 1, and to all of you who have continued to show your support through email, on our socials, and in neighbourhood conversations. We look forward to another year of building community with you!

Your board this year:

Jenn Scott, chair

Audrey Kvedaras

Andrea Nichols Egan, treasurer

Rebecca Green, secretary

Jade Woodruffe

Betty Zou

Raktim Mitra

Jennifer MacDonald

We did receive an expression of interest indicating an intention to run for the DECA Board. In keeping with our Board Nomination and Election Policy, the members of the current Board met to review the individual’s letter and discuss potential candidacy. Among other things, we considered potential and/or perceived conflicts of interest as well as previous interactions with the DECA Board and other members of our community. We felt that this individual’s previous actions in-person and online do not align with DECA’s values and mission and for that reason, the Board voted unanimously against putting the nomination forward for election to the Board.

Earth Day in and around Beaches East York

While DECA isn’t hosting an Earth Day event, we’d like to share these lovely options for the day with you.

Free Movie!

On Earth Day, this Saturday April 22 at 10am, MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon is hosting a FREE screening of What You Won’t Do for Love at The Fox Theatre (2236 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4E 1G2). The film is an absolute gem of a love story that examines our relationship with earth and reveals the deep love that environmentalists David Suzuki and partner Tara Cullis share. See the trailer here and RSVP using this link.

Free Compost!

Spend Earth Day close to home and prep your garden space. From Councillor Fletcher: Get your shovels ready! Free compost will be dropped at several locations next weekend.

Saturday, April 22nd:

  • Phin Park – 7:00 a.m.
  • Monarch Park – 8:00 a.m.
  • Kempton Howard Park – 9:00 a.m.
  • Riverdale Park – 11:00 a.m.
*Please remember to bring your own shovels and containers as the compost will not be in bags.*

Beach Cleanup

Join a beach cleanup at Woodbine Beach or Ashbridges Bay:

Market meeting, Yard Sale date, and gardens!

Hey Danforth East, we hope everyone is enjoying the spring (summer?) weather we’ve been having. In light of summer in sight, we have a few volunteer and workshop opportunities to share with you.

East Lynn Market Planning

Join the DECA Green committee in planning the market for this season! We are always happy to welcome new members to our group and would love some fresh ideas for the market. We are having our first meeting in East Lynn Park (with snacks!) on Saturday at 330pm by the playground.

Danforth East Yard Sale

Save the date! Our annual Danforth East Yard Sale is on Saturday June 10. Registration will begin on May 10. This year, we are adding an opportunity to sell at a multi-family sale (at Kimbourne Park United Church) for those that don’t have access to a yard. Please email green@deca.to to register for the multi-family sale, and direct other inquiries to yardsale@deca.to.

Garden Workshops

While we are all diligently NOT cleaning up our yards to give time for the pollinators to nest in that leaf litter, we can still plan for this year’s gardens! Food Up Front is offering balcony gardening (virtually) and garden planning workshops (in East York). Find out more here: https://www.foodupfront.ca/free-workshops

The S. Walter Stewart library is offering a workshop on Urban Vegetable Gardening – you can learn about that here:  04 April 27-Urban Vegetable Gardening.docx

Don’t forget our rescheduled AGM for May 1 at Hirut Restaurant!

AGM Postponed to May 1

Dear DECA members,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the  DECA AGM will be postponed to Monday May 1st.

We look forward to seeing you then!
