Join us on the Board! or at least for dinner!

As you may have noticed, DECA goes a bit dormant for January and February. We board members are emerging from our long winter’s nap (aka working our day jobs and tending to our other responsibilities) to rev up for spring and its promise of yard sales, Pride events, and farmers’ markets! And to kick it all off, we have our Annual General Members’ Meeting on Monday, March 25 at 6pm at Hirut Restaurant. Join us for a light vegetarian buffet of scrumptious Ethiopian food and a little community organizing! Please RSVP to this form so we can let Hirut know our numbers:
Speaking of community organizing, applications to join the DECA Board are now available! Click to access here:
You can see our Board Member Nomination and Election Policy here:
Please fill out and return to info@deca.to by March 11.
Bios for those nominated to the board will be posted to this blog by March 19.
One last thing — we’re expanding! Pending approval by membership, we would like to expand our borders to the west to Greenwood, and to the north to Cosburn. Our border to the east remains Main and to the south, the railway tracks.

Light Up Danforth East: Volunteer, Donate Food, Enjoy!

Join us in East Lynn Park (Danforth/Woodbine) from 5-6pm on Saturday December 2! We will have lanterns throughout the park to light up the night and delicious cookies sponsored by Trust Realty and hot chocolate from our local Danforth Mosaic BIA.

The lineup

Expect amazing performances from these artists:

Nenookaasi Ochrym -drumming

Toronto Dhaka Club and our local Bengali neighbours -song and dance

Hopeful PhoeniX -singing

Monarch Park high school choir -singing

At the end of the event we will turn on the lights in the trees at the top of the park with the assistance of a magical fairy!

A reminder that this Saturday is also the Danforth Mosaic BIA’s Late Night Holiday Shopping Event – you can shop all along the Danforth before or after our park event!

Hey DECA, let’s cook up some good!

Join up with some other DECA folks to create and serve a community brunch at Kimbourne Park United Church on Sunday November 19th.

Every month a group of volunteers shop, cook and serve a wonderful meal to people in our community. Food insecurity is a growing concern everywhere and this small gesture provides an opportunity for people to socialize and eat some delicious food!

We need volunteers to:
– prep and cook the food on Saturday afternoon
– cook and set up the lunch on Sunday morning
– serve the food from 11am to 1:30pm on Sunday
– clean up after the meal

If you are available to help out, please let us know at info@deca.to
Thanks for helping to make this event a great success!

Pumpkin Parade – volunteer to sling pumpkins!

Arguably the most magical time of year: Pumpkin Parade! On Wednesday Nov 1, the day after Halloween, the neighbours of Danforth East bring their Halloween jack o’lanterns to East Lynn Park and line them up on the path. It’s a happy and social event that we look forward to every year!

We need Volunteers

As with all of DECA’s events, community participation is key! We need volunteers throughout the evening. Here’s what volunteering entails:

545: come for setup and orientation (IE put on orange vests and practice using a barbecue lighter!)
6-8: various things, like: put candles in people’s pumpkins and light them, direct people where to put their pumpkins, take pictures/count pumpkins/run to dollar store for something we’ve forgotten
8-830: take candles out of the pumpkins, throw pumpkins into giant compost bin
