Young Danforth East Arts Fair artist Juliette Leach, 13, explores the beauty of nature in her work.

Thirteen-year-old Juliette Leach will be displaying her work Sept. 13-14 in East Lynn Park at the Youth Booth along with fellow young artist Stella Racca.

“The work I am showing in the arts fair is fine art that exhibits beauty in nature or presents my take on conflicts in society,” Juliette explains.

The active teen, who enjoys soccer and sailing along with reading, acting and playing the bass guitar, draws artistic inspiration from multiple sources. “I am inspired by nature, conflict and my general surroundings, but I have also been inspired by different famous artists such as Vincent Van Gogh or Frida Kahlo.”

What does the future hold for Juliette? “I would love to pursue a job involving creativity and have thought about becoming a graphic designer, high school art teacher, scientific illustrator or an architect.”

Continue the conversation with this promising young artist at the 2014 Danforth East Arts Fair (DEAF14), which takes place Sept. 13-14 in East Lynn Park. And feel free to continue the conversation on social media: #DEAF14 is on Twitter (@DECA_Arts) and Facebook along with Instagram and Pinterest.

Sept 2 Local Mayoral Debate – update

You have probably already heard by now that our friends the Greenwood Community Association (the residents’ association to the west of DECA) have organized a mayoral debate for Sept 2. Click here for our earlier post about it.

A few updates that we thought you should know:

  • David Sodnacki is attending
  • Rob Ford is not attending (he evidently cancelled today with no reason given)
  • The venue, Kimbourne United Church, has limited seating so plan accordingly. The debate is scheduled to begin at 7pm sharp.
  • DECA is not organizing this event, so if you have questions or comments, please contact the folks at Greenwood Community Association any way that you’d like:

PS: Best of luck to all the kiddos and teachers heading back to school on Tuesday!

East Lynn Farmers’ Market: Healthy lunches, Rooster Tales & Happy

4 (1)

It’s the week before school starts and/or the end of holidays for many in our neighbourhood so naturally we start to get excited (or full of fear) about packing lunches.  To get kids back in the swing of eating healthy lunches and learning, why not review this list with your little one this week: 10 Things you can Teach your Kids at a Farmers’ Market.

Then join our pals at Silly Goose Kids  who are bringing all kids of fun this week.  There will be stories, songs and circle time.  Fun starts at 4:30 p.m.  This will also be the last week for the wading pool at East Lynn Park so be sure to pack a suit and towel to cool off.  We’ll also welcome information from ZooShare, AutoShare and the Merrill Dog Park Association.

Children and adults can join them to learn a line dance to the hit song “HAPPY” by Pharrell Williams.  Show off your dancing skills at your next party or in your kitchen with your family.

Mayoral Forum in our ‘hood

Join your neighbours and mayoral candidates Olivia Chow, Rob Ford, and John Tory as they discuss transit, safety and policing, and their broad vision for the city.  Our neighbours to the west, the Greenwood Community Association, have organized a Mayoral Forum to be held on September 2nd at 7:00 p.m., Kimbourne Park United Church (200 Wolverleigh Blvd).

Due to capacity restrictions, the organizers are asking that only residents of DECA or the Greenwood Community Association attend this forum.

Meet #DEAF14 young artist Stella Vincenza Racca

Here’s some great information from the Danforth East Arts Fair organizers:

This year for the first time, Danforth East Arts Fair is hosting a free Youth Booth for talented young artists, thanks to generous community sponsors Bosley Real Estate and Pegasus Studios.

Youth Booth exhibitor Stella Racca will be selling her upcycled paintings cards and more at the Danforth East Arts Fair on Sept. 13-14.

Stella Vincenza Racca, 13, will be displaying her work September 13-14 in East Lynn Park as part of the Youth Booth.

“My work is up-cycling objects that would usually just get thrown out, like old bottle caps, the cuttings from printing paper to make my cards, and old nail polishes,“ says Stella.

“I’m often inspired by paper stores because I love the patterns and textures, though I can never afford them! I also get ideas from vintage jewelry so I try my best to incorporate a bit of that into my work — I like to think the bottle caps are sort of like antique picture frames.“

When she gets older, Stella would like to pursue filmmaking. But she isn’t opposed to being in front of the camera — acting is also a possible career path.

She adds: “I’d like to continue making and selling my work, so (the Danforth East Arts Fair) is a great opportunity to get started!“

Visit Stella and dozens of other exhibitors at East Lynn Park on Sept. 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
