Happy Birthday oaks ‘n acorns! Friday, Jan 23

We have seen so many wonderful businesses open in our neighbourhood in the past few years, and oaks ‘n acorns is one of our favourites. Winnie asked us to post the info about their upcoming birthday party, and it’s our pleasure to oblige:

We are excited to announce that we have now been in the lovely neighbourhood for 2 years!
We will be celebrating this grand event next Friday Jan 23 from 9:00am – 3:00pm with lots of super fun activities such as:
Face painting
Disco Party
Open Craft Table
Open Gym
and of course CAKE and amazing prizes
We hope to see you all at our party, thanks again for all your support these last 2 years.

Handmade whale
Handmade whale ready to take home from Merrily, merrily.

Happy news for the parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles of Danforth East! Merrily, merrily is re-opening their pop-up shop – this Saturday, January 10 at 10am – in their new home: 1854 Danforth Ave (right near Oaks ‘n’ Acorns). They’ll be popping up for 6 months (and if we’re lucky, they might just decide to make this their forever home).

The store hours will be 10 to 6, Tuesday – Saturday, and 11 to 4 on Sundays.

If you haven’t checked them out online yet (merrilymerrily.ca), Moxie and Jane carry gently used and very lovely clothing and goods for children, and they sell unique handmade and upcycled pieces by members of our own community. Isn’t the denim whale totally charming? In the upcycled category, they also have reversible, full-body bibs; cool superhero aprons; and neck-cowls made from hockey socks (does it get more Canadian than that kind of cold-weather, artful ingenuity?!).

They’re a consignment shop so your purchases also help out other parents in the neighbhourhood. Jane and Moxie say they are always looking for wooden toys and puzzles, classic books, Padraig slippers, Toms, Converse, Bogs, designer clothing and any other baby and children’s clothing or linens in pristine, like-new condition — so if you have any of those, you have an extra reason to pop in for a visit!

Festival of Lights: Pictures & Thank You!

A HUGE thank you to Angela Matich and her crew of volunteers for putting together Nov. 29th’s wonderful Festival of Lights. Thanks too to the approximately 1000 (!) of you who came out to East Lynn Park to help celebrate the season and light up the park Danforth East-style! The amazing turnout blew our estimates out of the water, so the hundreds of loots bags (courtesty of Art CaveKids Fun TownOaks & AcornsPegasus Studio & Silly Goose Kids–be sure to check out Silly Goose’s author event with Helaine Becker this Sunday at 10:30. Free cider!) went mighty quickly. So did the 300 cups of delicious hot chocolate donated  by Melanie’s Bistro and the yummy treats provided by Celena’s Bakery. Next year we’ll have more supplies on hand so no one goes empty-handed.

Thank you to the Pegasus Studio Dancers, the East End Music Project Choir for entertaining us, and to Show Pro for the sound equipment. The Zero Gravity Circus Fire Artist and LED Hula Hooper lit up the night spectacularly.

A big special thanks to our key sponsors who made this event happen: Sugarmoon (Catch their open house tomorrow, Dec. 10, 11-8pm!) and Corinne McCabe – Bosley Real Estate Broker.

Here are some beautiful shots of the festivities courtesy of local shutterbug Bruce Reeve and DECA’s Sheri Hebdon so you can relive the fun or see what you missed (and mark your calendars for next year!).
