Summer’s starting to hit its peak, but there’s lots of fun ahead yet at our park! For starters, this Thursday is movie night. Hosted by Councillor Mary Margaret McMahon, the Peanuts Movie will start at 8:30 p.m. It’s a family-friendly flick, so don’t miss it. And no need to make your own popcorn, it’ll be on sale during the screening.

Not able to make the movie? Don’t worry, there’s lots of great entertainment happening at the Market, like a live performance from Sonshine and Broccoli, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Toronto Public Library will have stories for the kids starting at 4:30 p.m. and DesignNook will be running bubble craft activitiesvisit their booth (and ask them about their newest Nook opening on our stretch of the Danforth).

For your sipping pleasure!

All our awesome farmers will be on site selling delicious produce, meats, baked goods and more this week (don’t miss the peaches! They’re perfection right now), including wineries Rancourt and Creekside.

A wellness break

Come and talk to Pegasus Dance Studios between 4:30 and 6:30 on the benefits of Dance in your child’s life. Not only is dance beneficial for physical  development but did you know that emotional, social and cognitive attributes also can be linked to dance! Pegasus will help you find the best extra-curricular activities for your child to keep them happy and healthy this fall,  in the Danforth East Area.

Got an old car seat?

Plus, are you looking to get rid of your old car seat? Don’t leave it on the side of the curb, come learn about a unique car seat recycling program that will soon be coming to our neighborhood care of Silly Goose Kids & Merrily Merrily.  Red Propeller is a social enterprise that helps Ontario families recycle their kids’ car seats but also provides work to those facing barriers to employment. Talk about a great opportunity to teach your lil’ environmentalist-in-the-making all about recycling. Check out the poster below for the full details about upcoming drop-off dates and locations. (Please don’t lug your car seats to the market this week as the Red Propeller crew will only be on hand to answer questions, the two drop off dates are in September.)

And we be remiss if we didn’t mention the final showdown that is expected at the market this week. The Table Tennis for Tuition ping pong tournament, a fundraiser for a joint DECA and Scadding Court Community Centre student scholarship, wraps up this week.  We have already awarded the first recipient of the scholarship to Chantelle. You can read more about her in a previous DECA Diaries post or come meet her in person at the tournament this week. The final match will be played around 6:00 p.m. and the fun continues until we’ve crowned our DECA champions. It’ll be a great night so come cheer on the finalists. Donations to the scholarship fund are also welcomed.  Check out some of action shots of players over the weeks below courtesy of Stephen Caissie.

Finally, mark your calendar for next week as DECA celebrates PRIDE at the Market on June 30th. In addition to all the usual market fun, Silly Goose Kids will be leading a Pride-themed craft. Hope you can join us! Learn more about DECA Pride at https://deca.to/pride and watch for details in next week’s blog post.

First Market at East Lynn Park – This Thursday!

Farmers’ market starts this week!

It’s time to welcome back our favourite crop of farmers!  The East Lynn Farmers’ Market opens this Thursday, June 6th.  That’s the “when”, now we will answer the what, who, how, and why…

What’s on this week at the Market?

At the Kids’ Korner this week, we’ll have the face-painters starting at 4:00 p.m..  Our friends from Silly Goose Kids will be at the park from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and we hear that they might have some storytelling and other fun planned!  New this year will be the BINGO Scavenger Hunt were kids get to learn about what veggies are in season each week for a chance to win $5.00 in ‘market bucks’. Visit the folks at the Kids’ Korner for more details (they’re the ones under the red tent).

Who puts on this market?

DECA works with MyMarket to put on the market each week.  DECA looks after events, volunteers and some of the marketing while MyMarket takes care of the farmers.  MyMarket certifies that the farmers at our market sell only what they produce.   Their mission is to build community through connecting real farmers to the urban marketplace, which we think is ideal!

How can you get involved?

First and foremost, come to the market and buy food from our farmers!!

Some volunteer opportunities are still available so if you want to know more, here is our post about volunteering from April.

We’re also looking for some photos of the market.  Each week we’ll profile the pictures you submit on this Blog and our Facebook page.  Toward end of the season we’ll have an online contest were people can vote for the photo that best captures the essence of the market.  Prizes to be announced later in the season!  Email submissions by clicking here. (If you are sending photos of people, please make sure you have their permission, particularly kids!)

Why is the Grand Opening next week?

We need a week to get up and running before we roll out the red carpet to really kick off the season.  Stay tuned for more details on the Grand Opening Celebration taking place next week (June 13, 2013).

The East Lynn Farmer’s Market runs every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. between June 6 – October 17 at East Lynn Park, located on the south side of Danforth Ave, just west of Woodbine Ave.
