Arts Festivals Galore!

The first ever Monarch Park Arts & Music Festival is happening this Saturday, August 12 (tomorrow), 12 noon – 8:00pm
Free!

Coming soon…

East End Arts presents Main Squared, a free nine-day arts and community festival that will activate and explore the public square at the corner of Main Street and Danforth Avenue from August 26 to September 3, 2017.

Blending contemporary art and community arts projects, the festival will feature art installations, interactive activities, workshops, performances, and more.

The festival location is situated in the unique spaces between the four high-rise towers that are home to thousands of residents and a commercial plaza with unoccupied storefronts. Given its accessible location, diversity, density of residents, and proximity to transit and other amenities, Main Square is full of potential as a vibrant and unique cultural hub. With Main Squared, East End Arts aims to increase engagement with the community to spark a sense of pride within the spaces in the neighbourhood in which they live, work, play, and own every day.

Visit the website for more info. Also note that they are looking for volunteers!

Still over a month to go but you definitely want to make a mental note and block off time now for the Danforth East (Community) Arts Fair #DECAF17, coming on September 16 & 17. One of DECA's signature events, this weekend of arts, beauty, community and fun is a must-do for everyone in this 'hood.

Reminder: Community Clean-ups this weekend

Just a quick reminder that this weekend is Community Clean-up Days in Toronto.  Grab your own bags from Pizza Pizza or the East York Civic Centre or you can join in one of the clean-ups organized in your local park. Either way, you’re also invited to swing by Arthur Potts’s office (1821 Danforth Ave) on Saturday between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. for refreshments. Happy cleaning!

Sunday at noon

Clean Up! Clean Up! Everybody do their share!

The only bad thing about the melting of snow is the reveal of months worth of hidden litter. Fortunately the City of Toronto Community Clean-up Days are just around the corner. On Saturday April 18 and Sunday April 19 join your neighbours in beautifying our streets, laneways and parks.

Various parks groups have organized clean-ups you can be a part of or feel free to grab a bag and some gloves and clean up your own street. Garbage and recycling bags are available NOW at Pizza Pizza locations throughout the city and at the East York Civic Centre.

Regardless of where you’re cleaning up, all cleaners are welcome to stop by Arthur Potts’s Constituency Office at 1821 Danforth Avenue on Saturday between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. for some hot chocolate and snacks.

If you know of another clean-up happening in the DECA boundaries, let us know in the comments and we’ll include it in our reminder post next week.  And to see if there are community clean-ups organized for other parks in East Toronto that may not be in the DECA boundary, check out the City of Toronto’s sign up page.

Skate Your Heart Out

Join your neighbours at Monarch Park this weekend for the Friends of Monarch Park Community Skating Party.  Fun runs Sunday from 3:00-5:00 p.m with hot chocolate, music and more.  Check out the poster below or the FoMP Facebook page for all the details.

And a huge thank you to our many hard-working, cold-loving, ice-flooding neighbours for creating rinks in other local parks as well.  The Friends of Stephenson Park have had smooth ice for a few days now and the East Lynn Park volunteers are expecting to have their ice smooth by the weekend.

Volunteers Needed for Arts Fair

By now you’ve likely made sure your weekend plans involve stopping by the Danforth East Arts Fair. But if you have two hours to spare, the organizers are looking for volunteers for a variety of different roles – everything from sitting in a chair and talking to shoppers to helping the artists with set up and take-down of tents and supplies.  Please click to find out more about volunteer openings.
