Market this week…and election news

Market This Week

This Thursday is the penultimate East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market so you won’t want to miss it. (Doesn’t penultimate sound so much better than second-last?) Come and stock up on all of your favourite fresh, locally grown/made food and support the amazing farmers that make our market possible.

DECA Tent

Last summer, Tak Bui, a Toronto artist and longtime friend of DECA, set out to travel to Newfoundland. These pen & ink drawings are the result of his road trip to the Rock, where he often stopped to draw the beautiful landscape and its inhabitants. Please drop by the DECA tent to view some of these original works.

A complete show of these drawings will be displayed at “The Newfoundlander” 472 Danforth Road (at Birchmount) for one day only from 1:00-5:00pm on December 16th. For more info email Tak here or visit his website.

Election News

You may have heard that there’s an election happening. Next week on October 11 at the last market of the year, DECA has invited the City Councillor candidates for Ward 19 (east of Coxwell) to come to the market for a meet-and-greet. We’ve also invited the English School Board Trustee candidates for Ward 16 (this ward).

As you buy the last of the market goods for the season, you can chat up the candidates about your burning municipal issues. Or just tell them you think they’re awesome for putting themselves out there (which they are).

A few days after the last market, DECA has organized a Ward 16 Trustee candidates meeting on October 15 at 7:30pm (one week from Monday). Mark your calendars! If you have a question you want to pose, send it by email.

Our Scholarship Winner!

For the past three years, DECA has presented a $2,000 Young Leader Scholarship to a high school student entering post-secondary who is involved in supporting/improving their communities. It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you our DECA 2018 scholarship recipient, Tafriha Islam, who was a Grade 12 student at Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute.

This incredible young woman has tutored young girls in her Regent Park Community since she was in Grade 9. She is dedicated to building a safe and healthy community and is always the first one to sign up for volunteering in different community programs and events such as Regent Park Film Festival, Sister2Sister, Regent Park Youth Ambassador, Art Heart, Artscape, and Sunday in the Park.

Tafriha created a Bengali school with her parents in the basement of their apartment for children ages 4-12 where her mother and her taught the young students how to read and write in Bengali. During this time, she also created a henna business to fundraise for Syrian refugees. Last summer she worked with CultureLink Settlement Community Centre to develop, write, and perform an original play about shifting cultural identities, entitled Unsettled. This group of young leaders/performers tackled many complex issues faced by many immigrant families and received many high praises from the community.

Drum roll please…. congratulations Tafriha! And thank you for sharing your thoughts, concerns and future plans with us:

What do you like most about the Danforth East community?

I love that this community always makes an effort to give back. There are so many support systems for the youth in our community. I have never seen such raw thoughtfulness in any community like ours.

I also love how our community has many small businesses to enjoy, and always holds the best events! There truly is never a dull moment.

What concerns you most about the future in our neighbourhood?

After the tragic event that occured recently, my biggest concern about our community is safety. As a community, I think it is important that we all take preventative measures to keep this community violence free. Even though no place is immune to crime, team work with our neigbours can really make a difference to minimize it. We should also continue to support each other in times of hardship and stay strong.

How are you spending the summer?

This summer I dipped my toes into the business world. I am currently working at a marketing and advertisement agency called “Bob’s Your Uncle” as an accounts intern. Some of our clients include IDC, Popeyes, BOSCH, and many more. I am learning new things everyday and this experience is helping me gain a lot of soft skills.

How are you feeling about the upcoming school year?

I’m feeling a mix of emotions for the upcoming year. I’m attending Schulich School of Business at York University. Coming from a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) background, I’m very excited to learn more about business. Though I am nervous for the transition from High School to University, I am lucky to have an amazing support system. Overall, I have an overwhelming feeling of happiness for this amazing journey ahead.

Scholarship presentation at the market

We also invite you to meet Tafriha this Thursday at the Farmers’ Market. Come cheer her on as she officially receives the DECA scholarship.

Thanks to everyone who danced the night away with us at the DECA Retro Dance Party in May. You helped to support this incredible young leader’s post secondary education!

Market this Week – celebrate Pride!

DECA Pride is happy to be hosting the 3rd annual DECA PRIDE @ The Market on June 21st from 3-7pm.

As always, the East Lynn Farmers’ Market is all about supporting the farmers. This week we are layering on a Pride celebration in honour of our thriving east end LGBTQ+ community and all of the wonderful allies who also live here. Pride isn’t just a downtown thing – join us as we bring Pride to the east end!

Over the course of the afternoon, we’ll have the amazing facepainters, pride-themed arts and crafts with Silly Goose Kids and Create Art Studio and we’re happy to welcome back the Coe Hill Girls, who will perform from about 5-6pm.

The winery on hand will be Chateau des Charmes, and some of the farmers and vendors may even have some pride-themed specials just for us!

Facebook event is here in case you want to invite others.

This event is sponsored by Steve’s Quality Meats and Deli (1938 Danforth). Steve’s approached DECA Pride last year asking how they can support us, and this is their second year sponsoring our market event! Steve’s is right across the street from East Lynn Park, so be sure go by any day for amazing cuts of meat, deli meat, cheeses, prepared food and hot food to go! You will not be sorry that you did.

If you are looking to take it to the next level, stop into Silly Goose on your way over and grab some of their Pride gear – kids clothes, buttons, and other treasures. Or buy some of the other high quality toys, crafts, baby goods and other fun stuff!

No automatic alt text available.

Create Art Studio is a newish Danforth East business located just eat of Coxwell and they have classes for kids, youth, and adults as well as PA Day and summer camps and after-school programs. Oh, and they do birthday parties and wine nights too! Thanks to Jen and the Create team for helping us celebrate Pride!

Last but not least, thanks to corbin creative for designing the poster – another amazing local business.

DECA Pride was started by DECA to bring together the east end LGBTQ+ community and create spaces and events right here in the east end where we live. Allies are always welcome. For more information or to join the DECA Pride email list, visit DECA.to/Pride or send us an email.

More Farmers’ Market Info

We still need DECA Booth volunteers for the Market season, which means you sit at the DECA table and help out as needed, mostly with chatting with people. At our market, we cook for our farmers thanks to our team of volunteer cooks.  Dinners can been as simple or as elaborate as you wish – no matter what they are always appreciated. Click on the links above to learn more or click here to send our market volunteers an email

Last Market of 2017! See you there!

Neighbours, the time has come for the very last East Lynn Farmers’ Market of this season.

Today, we’ll have facepainting, friendly DECA volunteers at the DECA Table and reps from the City seeking input about the Danforth Ave Planning Study. Please make sure to come and support the farmers, even if you are unable to stay (or if it’s raining).

Come by and tell your favourite vendor how much you appreciate them!

As the market season comes to a close, we have to say thank you to all of our farmers and vendors who make the whole market possible, along with the folks at Farmers’ Markets Ontario and especially Yuri, our market manager. There are so many volunteers who we cannot thank personally, but huge shout out to the volunteers who staff the DECA table (who also help with set-up and clean-up and many other tasks!), the facepainters, the organizers, the bloggers, and the kind souls who cooked for the farmers this year – many of whom answered our desperate, mid-summer plea when we had a daunting number of empty slots. Our market is special because of all the love that goes into it, and in turn, all the love that comes out of it.

Special thanks to Alison McMurray and Rebecca Green, who are there week after week and who can be seen around 3pm and 7pm most Thursdays schlepping things up and down the hill from and to the shed (and answering questions like “Why is there no corn in June?” with a smile on their faces) and to Shelley Darling who books the community table, the bloggers and generally keeps track of who is where week after week.

See you today from 3-7 at East Lynn Park!!

  • Note: If you can’t make it today or would rather provide feedback to the City online, a feedback form is now live on the study’s website (www.toronto.ca/danforthstudy), with a deadline of October 23, 2017. All responses received will form part of the consultation related to the material originally presented to the community on September 14, 2017
