local biz news and call for volunteers

The holidays are right around the corner, and DECA’s third annual tree lighting holiday festival will be held in East Lynn Park (date TBD) and we need help hanging the lights!

Sign up for shifts this weekend, Saturday or Sunday (November 8 & 9) for an hour between 10:00am and 2:00pm by clicking here: http://vols.pt/LM9C1Q – thank you!!

And while we’re on the topic of the holidays, if you are thinking about starting your shopping early this year, start with our amazing local shops along the Danforth. Most of us heard the sad news that McCormick’s Imports is closing down after 13 months on Danforth, west of Coxwell.  It’s a loss for the neighbourhood and one that we do not want to repeat. Our dollars matter, and choosing local businesses makes a real difference in our community.

On that note – a few announcements…

Neighbourhood Toy Store Day – November 8

Celebrate Neighbourhood Toy Store Day this Saturday, November 8 at our favourite neighbourhood toy store! Silly Goose Kids will have events, games and prizes and no tax all day long.

DECA’s 5th Annual Pumpkin Parade! Can you help?

This year is the fifth anniversary of DECA’s magical Pumpkin Parade in East Lynn Park – and it falls on a Saturday!  If the weather’s right, we could be in for a record-setting, spectacular display.

As always, we’re looking for volunteers to help. Extra cleanup help after the parade will be especially welcome this year….skip the gym and toss pumpkins instead!

  • Greeters –  During the parade, volunteers will help their neighbours place and light their pumpkins. We’ll need three or four of these volunteers.
  • Haulers –  After the parade, volunteers will load pumpkins into dumpster bins on site.  If you have a wagon or wheelbarrow (or bike trailer?), you’re like pumpkin-hauling gold. For this job, the more the merrier. (roughly 9-10 p.m.)
If you’re available to help out with this fun event, please contact Heather Bean by clicking here.

The Last Farmers’ Market of 2014 – Today

It’s been an incredible 2014 season at the East Lynn Farmers’ Market. Each week we were offered great food from friendly farmers, along with a blessing from the weather gods with the majority of Thursday’s being rain-free. But now it’s time to say good-bye and thank you as this will be the last week of the farmers’ market for 2014.

We would like to send out a HUGE DECA thank you to all the volunteers who made the market happen each week.  These amazing people donate their time to help set up tables, paint children’s faces, cook and serve dinner for the farmers, answer questions and promote DECA, run children’s activities and clean up the tents and tables afterwards. We hear from a number of farmers that our market is their favourite and no doubt it’s because of the great vibe that gets created by the volunteers and, or course, the shoppers!

Please be sure to come by to stock up your freezers and cellars and to say farewell for the season!

The East Lynn Farmers’ Market runs every Thursday from 3-7:00 p.m. between June 5 – October 16 at East Lynn Park, located on the south side of Danforth Ave, just west of Woodbine Ave. Stay up to date by visiting the East Lynn Market Facebook page.
