To Market To Market To Buy A Fat Fig

The weather may be cooler, but the bounty is hearty at the East Lynn Farmers’ Market these days. Join us this week to fill your freezer with fresh, local produce.  Join us next week to fill your belly with the creations of Celebrity Chef and local restauranteur, Lynn Crawford (Restaurant Makeover, Pitchin’ In and Ruby Watch Co.) Did I mention there will be wine from Inniskillin?

This week’s craft  – jersey knit bracelets

Our own creative crafter, Melissa, told everyone at the shopping bag and scarf craft earlier this season that she would figure out what to do with the remnants of the tee shirt craft. Well, true to her word, she’s come up with a fabulous little number -friendship jersey knit bracelets! We are up-cycling with old tee shirts again this week.  Once you learn how to make these, you can make an arm full in no time. Trade them with your friends and make different thicknesses to wear together. Bring your tee shirt remnants, or a new old tee to make into these fab bracelets.

It all gets started at 4:30. Hope to see you there!

DECA’s East Lynn Harvest Festival – October 6th

Celebrity Chef, Lynn Crawford, from the Food Network and Ruby Watch Co. will be at the East Lynn Farmers’ Market on Thursday, October 6th to prepare some delicious food and suggest wine pairings from her line with Inniskillin. As if that weren’t enough, we are delighted to offer pumpkin treats from Cozy Cafe, music by Wolfgang Bros., pumpkin decorating and giveaways!

Honestly, isn’t this event alone worth the measly $10 that we ask for your yearly DECA membership? To say nothing of the:

  • (ahem) fantastic DECA Diaries
  • the Business Revitalization Team that is improving the Danforth one store at a time
  • the parks committee working to improve our public spaces
  • the community cocktail party (more on that coming soon)
  • the pumpkin parade (Nov. 1st)
  • the incredible Danforth East Arts Fair
  • DECA Learns,
  • and so much more.

East Lynn Park News

How much do you love the East Lynn Park Wading Pool?  Enough to donate a few bucks to help us cover the cost of painting it?  You probably know that it was vandalized last year.  This year, DECA got together some great volunteers and bought ourselves some paint to paint the pool.  If you would like to help out and donate some dollars to help cover the cost, then check out our website at www.danfortheastcommunityassociation.com.  Please feel free to either drop your cash donations off at the weekly farmers’ market DECA table or by clicking the PayPal donation button on the DECA website. The City of Toronto doesn’t cover the cost of painting the pool, just maintaining the plumbing etc. Thanks!

Thursday, August 25th – MEGAMIND Movie In The Park  Councillor, Mary-Margaret McMahon and DECA are sponsoring Movie Night In The Park on Thursday, August 25th at 8:30 p.m.  This is always a fantastic night at the farmers’ market.  Families can bring their blankets and chairs and settle in on the hill for Megamind.  Watch the trailer, here. Dog Days

Last week’s corn fest and picnic at the East Lynn market was a great party that many of didn’t make it out to because of the heat.   Those who were there kept their toes in the wading pool and had a great time with the bands who braved the heat to play.  This week:

Kraft Korner

The korner will be set and ready to go with a slightly more mature craft especially for those budding fashionistas.  It’s a sea-tastic DIY gold shell necklace a la Marc Jacobs.  This craft has limited participants so please pre-register at decacrafts@gmail.com.  Materials will be supplied, but feel free to bring anything else you would like to add or replace to make your piece an original.  That’s a 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at East Lynn Park.

Children’s Yoga with Svetlana

Svetlana Vlasic is well known to moms with babies in the Danforth East neighbourhood as a fixture in the Main Square Community Centre teaching “Mom and Tot” yoga classes.  She and her husband Slobodan teach many classes in community centres in the east end and from their home, to all ages and all levels of yogis and yoginis!  Svetlana will be at the market to give a free class for kids from 4:30 til 5:00 this Thursday.  If your kids are anything like my kids, they could probably use some zen.

Trees!

Aside from last night, we haven’t received much rain in July.  Just a reminder to give those trees on your boulevard a little drink – especially the younger ones.

Garbage!

Starting September 6, 2011, garbage day will change from Tuesdays to Fridays for residences between Coxwell and Victoria Park, from Danforth north to Massey Creek.

To Market, To Market…

[slideshow]

The grand opening of the East Lynn Market was a great success last week.

First, it was sunny! Second, fabulous DECA volunteer, Susan Crofts, unveiled her handy work by way of a new market apple costume and Pria was a sport and showed it off all afternoon long.

Another amazing DECA volunteer, Jon Isaac, spent his winter, not only becoming a father for the second time, but giving birth to two amazing old-fashioned carnival games — a ring toss and bean bag toss.  Bothwere unveiled last week. Judging by the number of kids crowding around them, I’d say they were unanimously considered awesome.

The clown on stilts entertained the other kids by juggling, telling jokes and pulling long strings of ribbon out of his mouth and people’s heads.

Charlie from Columbo’s Pizza’s made swift business selling slices of pizza and rice balls swimming in pasta sauce. Both he and the Cozy Cafe sisters will be selling warm meals at the market every week this month, so arrive hungry.

And the city councillors lined up to cut our ribbon. Thanks to Janet Davis, Mary Fragedakis and Mary-Margaret McMahon for supporting the market!  It was a wonderful kick-off to a wonderful summer of Thursday evenings in the park.

This week – Kids’ Activities at the Market:  More than face painting and honey sticks!

Puppets, crafts, story-telling and more are on the line-up for the “Kids’ Korner” of the East Lynn market this year.  On the (very high) heels of last week’s stilt-walking clown, we have two very special activities this Thursday.  At 3:30, Melissa Peretti will teach kids paper pot planting (register at decacrafts@gmail.com).  At 4:30, Beth Yarzab from CareerFitMom will run a Playfit class with everyone — parents and kids alike will have a chance to play and get fit!

And of course, there will be face painting.  Our hours for now are 4:00-6:30, and may expand when we get more volunteers.

Strawberry Social – Thursday June 30

At 4:30 , the dancers and singers from the local S.P.A.C.E studio will put on a medley for the crowd. I’m told some Hairspray songs, a hip hop number and a ballet piece from Swan Lake are on the program. A real treat!

Then, at 5 p.m., DECA will host its second square dance in the park. That’s right city slickers, dust off your cowboy hats and overalls! Members of the Kitgut Oldtime Stringband will venture up to East Lynn from their usual haunt at Kensington Market to  play mountain music on their fiddle, banjo and guitar, and singer Ivy Mairi who moonlights as a square dance caller will talk us all through the steps.

Ivy specializes in teaching beginners. So bring your granny and your kids for the evening!

Hope to see you there.
