Another submission to the photo contest!  Just beautiful!  Thanks for submitting Stephen.  To see more photo’s from Stephen Caissie, check out the full album on Facebook.

Did you know that some of the produce for sale at the market are grown by Toronto high school students?  School Grown is run out of Toronto non-profit organization, Food Share.  Their goal is to increase food literacy in youth by hiring high school students to run urban market gardens.  Students learn in a classroom  throughout the year, then get practical experience during the summer managing the garden, selling at markets and delivering to restaurants.   The proceeds from sales are reinvesting into ongoing food literacy projects throughout the city.  Be sure to quiz the students on exactly which genus and species the pepper your buying belongs to.

This week we have guests from the David Suzuki Foundation and Toronto Water attending.  We also lined up a sunny 23 C day for you, your friends and family to enjoy a stroll through the market or to stay for a picnic.

On August 22nd we’ll be having our annual Movie Under the Stars night.  Want a hint at what the movie is?  It’s Princess Bride!  OK, I suck at giving hints.  (We also told you last week, but someone else wrote that post.) The movie won’t start until the sun goes down around at 8:45 pm, but we’re looking for a handful for volunteers to help make popcorn from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm.  If you or someone you know is interested, send me an email.  It’s simply inconceivable to watch a movie in the park without popcorn!

The East Lynn Farmers’ Market runs every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. between June 6 – October 17 at East Lynn Park, located on the south side of Danforth Ave, just west of Woodbine Ave. Stay up to date by visiting the new East Lynn Market Facebook page.

Farmers’ Market & Pop-Up Shop Deal of the Week

We’re on vacation this week, so you’ll just have to excuse the combined market and pop-up shop posts.  Once you have a read, you’ll see that they actually fit quite well together.

Here’s another photo from the fabulous market for the photo contest courtesy of Jen.  Thanks, Jen (and mysterious redhead who enjoys peas)!

Did you get to check out the T.O. Ceviche Bar last week?  If not, you’re in luck.  They had so much fun in our neighbourhood last week they’re coming back for more.  Lucky us!  Fish tacos, fish kabobs, sweat potato burgers!

This week will also feature celebrity chef Lynn Crawford!  She will be joining Primeridge Pure and making the cheesecake featured in the Ace Bakery cookbook using Stacey’s Grey Rush cream cheese. Stacey just had her baby, so I’m not sure whether we can expect to see her this week.  Congratulations Stacey & family!

And in more farmer news, everyone should test the fresh strawberry smoothies available from O.K. Farms.  Delicious and nutritious!

At 4:30 pm our Silly Goose Kids friends will be making ‘crafty bands’ picture bracelets for all those junior crafters.

Be sure to watch for the roving Yummy Stuff staff handing out free samples at the market this week. You’ll be able to spot them by their white aprons and the crowds of happy people around them. If you haven’t checked out our pop-up shop yet, Thursday is the perfect opportunity. Morag’s shop, right across from East Lynn park, will be open until 8 pm.

Don’t forget to send your best market pictures to events(at)danfortheastcommunityassociation.com.  We’ll repost all the picture at the end of the season and vote on a winner!

Finally, if you’ve seen those Stop Line 9 signs around and wondered what it was all about, come chat with organizers at the market this week.  They’ll be there with information on what is being planned for the oil pipeline and what their concerns are.

Farmers’ Market: Last Week & This Week

Well last week was a blast!  The Food Truck Festival was such a success.  So much so, they kinda ran out of food a bit early!  Thank you to all shoppers who came out to try the tasty treats and to the extra volunteers who made the day a success.  And apologies to those who showed up later and the selection was limited.

In farmer news, did you know there is a new vendor at the market with blueberries and flowers?  Now you do.  Also, the corn is simply amazing right now; another new farmer is selling locally grown harvested and created organic skin care products (From the Meadow); and check out the picture of the $10 mixed fruit basket.  A whole lot of reasons to go to the market this week!

This week, T.O. Ceviche Bar will offer a Ceviche Demo this week from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Their Creative Food Directors Alvaro Valencia and Sean Lacey will explain how to prepare ceviche using fish, lime juice, ginger, limo hot pepper, herbs and seasonal greens and fruits.  They’ll be coming with samples!   Bring your adventurous appetite for ceviche, gluten-free sweet potato and quinoa burgers (served on roti) and fish anticuchos (Peruvian kebab) at promotional prices.

If you’re looking for a fire extinguisher or carbon monoxide detector, stop by the community booth to learn more about fire prevention and safety and enter the draw.  There will be stuff for the kids too!

Finally, bring your adventurous little ones for the 4:30pm craft with Mrs. Darling.  This week she’ll be running some water gun painting!

Food Trucks Invade East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market

Food Truck Festival

While you’re picking up your fresh, Ontario produce this week, why not stay for dinner? We’ve invited some food trucks to our lovely market. They’ll be featuring some of the delicious produce, like potatoes, strawberries and tomatoes, from the farmers themselves.

The food trucks will be along East Lynn Avenue.

If you’re wondering what’s in it for the wee ones this week, we’ve got that covered too. Our friend Dan Yashinsky, storyteller extraodinare, will be at the market at 3:30 pm making our children’s imaginations pop and faces glow as he tells interactive and entertaining stories. Then, at 4:15 pm Hannah Naiman will get their little bodies dosidoing and swinging with their partners for a Family Barn Yard Square Dance. Yee Haw!

This week will also feature music from local talent – Kanuckistan! They describe themselves as a Root-blues, international folk and original music band. Sounds interesting!

This week, Mrs. Darling will be doing crafts at 4:30 while Pegasus Studios will run a pre-school dance activity at 4:30.

And if you’re looking for information on eating organic, or on a certain local dog park (but not an organic dog park), representatives from the Organic Council of Ontario and from the Merrill Park Dog Association will be at the market to answer all your questions.

And here’s a teaser for next week: It’s the FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL!!!! July 18th promises not to disappoint. We have four food trucks confirmed – Crossroads Diner, Corrado’s, Feisty Jacks and Buster’s Sea Cove. Bring your appetites!

Your Lists for the Farmers’ Market

Have you tried the Ontario raspberries yet? What about the sweet peas? Those are two staples on my Thursday shopping list for the farmers’ market. If you want some inspiration for your shopping list, have a look at some of the pictures below.

On the ‘fun’ list this week, the splash pad at East Lynn Park is OPEN! And our friends from Silly Goose Kids are popping by with bubbles and other fun activities at 4:30.

Nurses from Toronto East General Hospital’s Emergency Department will be at the market with information on sun safety and tips for staying healthy this summer.

Also, we’re looking for a handful of volunteers to help with the next exciting event – the Food Truck Festival on July 18th. If you can spare a few hours, or have a teenager looking for some volunteer hours, please let us know. (shelleydarling(at)yahoo.ca)
