This weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Old’s Cool General Store, 250 Westlake @ Lumsden, they are having their weekly fresh from the farm market, and will be opening up their big side door and selling everything inside. Here’s the event listing for all the details. Make sure to ask Zahra about the storied history of this space  (spoiler alert: it was used as a rehearsal space for some legendary musicians).

Also this weekend, come celebrate Silly Goose Kids’ 5th Birthday! Lots of events, giveaways and no tax all weekend. Congratulations to Shamie and Tracey on reaching this huge milestone! 2054 Danforth

sgk-bday

On Tuesday, September 27, the DECA Board will meet at Time Capsule, 2183 Danforth, from 7:30 until about 9:30pm. If you would like to join us, click here to RSVP by email. We will hold space on the agenda for any questions or ideas that our visitors have, but no pressure at all as listeners are also most welcome.

Activities galore!

Fall is that magical time of year when the leaves change, the days darken, and we all have to think about what kinds of activities we are going to undertake for the year. (If you are like me, you were frantically trying to sign up your kids for swimming lessons this morning at 7am!) Here are a few options in the neighbourhood…

East End Music Project
(non-profit music program for kids on Tuesdays)

create-community

Miranda from the East End Music Project sent this note along:

I run the East End Music Project (I do this out of LOVE as a volunteer), which is a very cool social purpose music school in the East End.

The project is taught by professional musicians and educators with instruction at a very high level. The social purpose part of it is that all the class fees are geared to income. Our focus is on collaboration and working together in the classes. It is a fabulous opportunity. I have a couple of spots available because I’ve hired more teachers to increase our capacity. We would love to have your families join us.

If you’ve ever thought about music lessons, this is a great way to get involved in a social purpose enterprise, support local musicians, and participate in something really special. Your kids will also get a stellar music experience. All classes are subsidized. No restrictions on who can apply! Check out www.eemp.ca to see what classes still have availability. Thanks!

Are you ready to sing?

Some locals, Sarah and Damaris, are starting a new choir and would like YOU to join! Registration form is here and some additional details are below.

Pegasus Studios

SO many classes, so little time. What can we say about Pegasus? It’s music, dance, art, choir, yoga – stuff for kids, adults, kids and adults together – if you don’t know about this neighbourhood institution, you should. www.pegasusstudios.com

Fitness

We have been so lucky to have so many new fitness-related businesses open up in this neighbourhood (coinciding nicely with the bakeries, ice cream shop and restaurants!). Here are some of them:

Fly Girl Fitness

Bomb Fitness

Ankh Yoga

Legacy Indoor Cycling

Counterbalance Studio Pilates

Career Fit Mom

Dragonz Martial Arts (adult and kid classes available)

Bell’s Martial Arts (adult and kid classes available)

Monarch Park Stadium (adult and kid classes/activities, running track)

One more thing….

Our next DECA Board meeting will be next Monday, September 21 starting at 7:30pm. If you’d like to join us, drop us a line here and we can let you know where we’re meeting. Last time we enjoyed an hour at the beginning to meet & greet, but this time we will get right to it a 7:30pm because we have a lot to cover. All are welcome!

Updates, movies and next DECA Board mtg!

Hello Neighbours!

As we head into a couple of days of heat advisory, a small reminder to please check on vulnerable neighbours, take extra care with kids and pets, and please please please water your trees. Buckets full of water for the trees please. (If you have a moment to spare, please water some trees at a park or in a schoolyard!)

And now for the news…

Merrily, merrily is here to stay!

merrily-merrily-logo-2

Another one of our pop-up shops has just become a permanent store on at 1854 Danforth (beside Oaks ‘n Acorns) – congratulations to Merrily, merrily!  If you haven’t been yet, they are a go-to for new, nearly new and handmade goods for babies, kids and even moms-to-be. It’s a lovely shop, and they have even more stuff for sale online: www.merrilymerrily.ca.

Could this get any better? Yes! They are a consignment shop, so every purchase puts money in the pockets of your neighbours as well as these local mompreneur owners. Win-win! And don’t forget the summer pop-up promo on until August 31 with current and former pop-up shops, which will save you the tax at Merrily, merrily (click here for more info on the promo).

Gentle reminder: Permanent stores are only permanent as long as we support them. SHOP LOCAL!

Speaking of awesome local shops…

Face to Face Games is celebrating their 1st Birthday!

This Tuesday, August 18 please visit Face to Face Games to enjoy 10% off everything in the store and buy-one-get-one-free lemonades all day long.

Face to Face Toronto’s awesome cafe
A few things you should know about this amazing shop:

  1. It is packed every night. Packed.
  2. They have an amazing cafe full of fresh, healthy and very affordable meals, snacks, coffee and their signature house-made lemonade and iced tea. Seriously. You need to try it.
  3. The owners want the space to be as much a neighbourhood drop-in as a shop. There are games on hand available to play for free (they have games for all ages) and they encourage people to bring along their favourite game from home to play as well. No catch, just a sincere interest in wanting to be a place where people gather.

Go there on a date, with your friends, with your kids, or go theire by yourself. You’ll love it!

Board games to Board meetings…and who doesn’t LOVE a good Board meeting?

DECA Board Meeting

This Tuesday, August 18 will be he next DECA Board meeting. Do you want to join us? We are trying something new this time, and will spend 7:30-8:30 with no formal agenda to give us a chance to chat with anyone who chooses to join us. Come and say hi and have a beverage with us (not on us)! If you want to stay for the actual meeting, you’re welcome to do so but you don’t have to. We thought this might be a better way engage with potential volunteers and others than our usual meeting-only approach.

If you want to come, please RSVP by clicking here and we can provide the details. (We do this so that we know who is coming and can ensure that we meet in a big enough space to accommodate!)

And last but not least…

Prom clothes donations needed and other news!

Donate prom clothes! April 17th deadline

This is a wonderful initiative and thanks to DECA member Diana Gibbs for sending this along:

The New Circles’ annual Prom Boutique Clothing Drive is now in high gear and they need your fancy clothes! The boutique is the largest in the city serving girls and boys and expects over 500 youth this year.  Working with schools across the city, the program ensures that the financial barriers do not prevent students participating in the big day.

In This Closet (1765 Danforth) is kindly offering to be a drop-off site for east-enders and will accept your donations until April 17th.   Don’t leave your fancy clothes to languish in your closet. Bring them to In This Closet and put them to work.  Let’s make sure all our graduating youth can celebrate this milestone event in style.

Looking for:

  • New or gently used suits, shirts, ties/bow-ties, shoes
  • New or gently used formal or cocktail dresses, shoes, evening bags and jewelry

Urgently needed:

  • Prom wear for young men
  • Prom wear for women in sizes 10 – 22
  • New make up and nail polish
  • New toiletries for men and women
