Carter’s Arts Inventory

There is too much talent hiding behind closed doors along Danforth East. Carter’s Ice Cream is offering neighbourhood artists and craftspeople the chance to share and advertise their talent. Owner Tammy invites you to drop off an 8×11 piece of paper with pictures of your work (along with your contact info) at her shop, located at the corner of Woodmount and Danforth. She’s putting together a binder to showcase everyone’s work. So next time you need a new painting, sock monkey or custom crafted table…think ice cream! Go on down and check out the book of neighbourhood talent.

Baby Steals, Kid Steals

In a neighbourhood teeming with fashionable young children, we’ll bet that many of you have ordered from Baby Steals or Kid Steals, two popular daily deals websites based in Utah. (The Jelly the Pug dress in my daughter’s closet is proof I’ve done so myself!) Well, guess what? They’ve heard of East Lynn Park all the way down there — and they want to see it for themselves. On Thursday, June 21, the women behind these websites, Jana and Rett, will be visiting East Lynn to meet local parents for one of their Canadian meetups. Bring a blanket, some sunscreen and drop in to meet Jana, Rett and a whole bunch of parents who live in our neighbourhood. You can RSVP to their event here. It will run from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. By then, our weekly farmers market will be underway, so you can pick up something fresh for dinner on your way home. Doesn’t that sound like a perfectly delightful afternoon?

Farmers’ Market 5th Anniversary Party Tonight

So much to see, do and EAT at the farmers’ market tonight.
Come anytime between 3 and 7 p.m. to partake in the anniversary excitement.  Starting at 3 p.m. bring the kids for some drumming with Linda Chamberlain.  At 4 p.m. there will be an official cake cutting with a delicious cake from Melanie’s Bistro along with the unveiling of a new, more adult focused, board game.
Activities continue with a 4:30 p.m. performance from a stilt walking, juggling clown and crafts with Melissa from Ms. Darling’s.  Then at 5:30pm there will be another special activity courtesey of Silly Goose Kids.  And of course, there will also be the regular face painting tent.
Look for the giant DECA veggies walking about – the carrot, the pea, the tomato and a brand new addition to the crop.

The Joys of June

 Farmers’ Market Fifth Anniversary Festival

I know what you’re thinking…this is NOT the fifth year of the farmers’ market! I KNOW!  That’s what I thought too, but we all hunkered down and thought about it for a while and yes indeed, we are embarking on the fifth year of this little experiment.

Join us this Thursday as we celebrate five years fabulous. There will be lots of great activities and a very awesome new farmers’ market feature to be unveiled.  Watch this space for more info. The market runs each Thursday, 3-7 p.m. at East Lynn Park, on Danforth, west of Woodbine.

S Sense in Design 

S Sense in Design is a design studio that provides furniture, lighting and home accents. The products and art are made of eco-friendly, natural materials that are handcrafted in Canada. And it’s more than a shop. Owner, Laura Walters is a stylist who can help you find a style for your home with colour consultations, healthy home advice, upholstery service or wallpaper selection.

Art Of The Danforth: The FINAL Weekend

Seriously, how fantastic is the Art of the Danforth?  How much of it have you taken in? Has there been something that has inspired you? Amazed you? Brought a smile to your face as you walked along the street? For me, it was walking home from East Lynn Park with my two little boys and stopping to type a message on a…typewriter!  My kids were incredulous at such a machine. We left the message, “I am six years old” tied to the tree. That six-year-old said the whole experience was ‘super awesome.’ Also, we really liked the electronic window pong  and watering can. And if you don’t know what that is, you should take a wander down the Danforth before this weekend is done.

There are only two more days of Art of the Danforth 2012!  Here’s what’s coming up on this final weekend:

Gerrard and Woodbine..More Than Just Ruby Tuesdays

Found this little tidbit of information on my virtual travels this evening thanks to Mary-Margaret McMahon.

The Gerrard Woodbine Neighbourhood Association launch is this Saturday, June 9th.

  • Historical walking tours from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. with the event wrapping up by 1:30 p.m.
  • Treats, magician, face painting, etc.
  • Meeting in rain (at the Naval Club) or shine (in the parking lot). We will only cancel the walking tour if it is absolutely pouring or a thunderstorm. We may need to compress the two tours into one depending upon the weather. But do as the British do and bring your ‘brollies’!
  • There will be a table set up so you can jot down name ideas for the ‘hood and place them in a ballot box. The favourites will be listed in an online / email poll for final voting. So… what shall it be….?

Merrill Bridge Ravine

Dina is doing some creek maintenance in Merrill Bridge Ravine and is about to embark on the ambitious endeavour of creating a more substantial creek bed on the public property behind 1 to 15 West Lynn Rd which hopefully will dry up the swampland that is currently there and reduce the amount of mosquitos we have been plagued with. If you are interested in joining her for some satisfying physical labour she would be most happy. Also, if your children play in the ravine, please ask them not to dam the stream. Though this is a fun thing to do, it causes swamping which provides the mosquitos with way too much breeding ground. Contact Dina at dwaik(at)rogers.com for more information.

Mommy and Me and Murals and Me

Check out two recent posts from Sarah on her East End Pioneer blog. The first, is about two terrific gyms in our neighbourhood that are offering Mommy and Me fitness classes.  What better way to meet other moms in the neighbourhood and get yourself and your babe out of the house? The second is a new mural that was community-created as part of the Art of the Danforth. If you like Sarah’s stories on news in the neighbourhood, stay tuned because you’ll be reading a lot more of her musings in this space coming soon.
