The Midway Meander
Did you know about the gargoyles above Pizza Nova? What about the row of Italian delicatessens that once lined the Danforth in our area? If you missed out on Joe Cooper’s guided historical tour of the Danforth as part of the Jane Jacobs walks last spring, you are in luck — he’s agreed to do an encore for DECA members. The indefatigable East York Mirror columnist has deep roots in our neighbourhood. His grandfather started a butcher shop at the corner of Woodbine and Danforth in the 1920s, which his father took over. The family bought one of the first cars in the area – a Model A Ford — which they used for deliveries. The problem? When his granddad took his first spin, he didn’t know how to work the thing, including the breaks, so he simply spun around the block until the gas ran out.
Joe’s two-hour tour, “The Midway Meander,” will run THIS Sunday Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. starting at Greenwood Subway Station (front doors). It is free for DECA members. But to keep the crowd manageable, we are asking interested folk to RSVP. Joe would like to keep the group to 20. Please email Catherine at email@example.com if you want to be added to the list, and put “The Midway Meander” in the subject line.
