Music, art, math, and sports for kids in the ‘hood

With the start of classroom learning and the slow approach of winter it is time to find new ways to keep your kids challenged, entertained, and building new skills. Luckily there are many types of leagues, lessons, and classes available in the ‘hood for kids of all ages (and some for adults too!).  We have likely missed some great options but this is hopefully this can help you plan ahead. We know that some places have specific registration dates so by now classes may be full while for others, registration may not have opened yet –  we still wanted to have as much info in one place as possible!

If your kids are into music and want to learn an instrument, perhaps they could try piano lessons at the Galloping Goat Music Studio or guitar lessons at the 12th Fret. Or perhaps they want to participate in a larger music program they could try the East End Music Project, the Upper Beaches Music School or Elite Music Academy. Maybe your kids aren’t quite old enough for structured music lessons and you just want them to learn to enjoy music and dance then you might want to try Oaks ‘N Acorns or Rainbow Songs. If your kids want to forget making music and learn to dance then Pegasus Studios,  The S.P.A.C.E or Toronto Dance Company might be the place for you.

Maybe your kids like creative activities, but music isn’t their thing, then try the classes at the Artcave, Create Art Studio, or Fresh Paint Café. For a different type of creativity the Toronto Tool Library has many maker activities and The Cube, which is not quite in the DECA boundaries, has coding lessons for kids. Also don’t forget the Toronto Public library has a large selection of workshops and regular programs for kids.

If your kids want or need some intellectual support for school activities there are even tutoring services available in the ‘hood. Kumon Math and Reading Centre or Miss Math Tutoring might be able to provide the academic help your child needs.

For active kids who need to run there are a plethora of sports and physical activities in the ‘hood. For soccer, East York Soccer has the most leagues in the area, but Cherry Beach Soccer has leagues in the area and both Little Kickers and Monarch Park Stadium offer soccer lessons for little kids. Monarch Park Stadium also has baseball, floor hockey, and basketball leagues for kids. Hockey, baseball, and basketball leagues in the area are run by East York Skating, East York Baseball, and Toronto Lords Basketball OBA. East York Gymnastics rounds out the East York sports offerings, while Jack of Sports and Beaches Swim School offer swimming options year round. Last but not least, don’t forget about all the activities offered in the area by the City of Toronto.

Last, but not least, martial arts are always a good way for kids to burn some energy, build strength, and learn confidence. Dragonz Martial Arts, Sam Lumpini, Bell’s Martial Arts, Centerline Martial Arts, and Desantos Martial Arts all offer kids’ lessons and a variety of fighting styles.

No matter what kind of experience you want for your kids, don’t forget to check out all the wonderful selections close to home!

Tool Library after school programs for young makers

Thanks to guest blogger Michelle Mismash of the Toronto Tool Library for this post.

Hello Danforth East Community!
Michelle here to give you an exciting update on the youth programs at Toronto Tool Library’s Danforth location. In April I wrapped up my time at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. You can now call me Master! This summer, we have been working hard to make our youth programs the best that they can be. We have a new name – TTL Kids! – a delightful new logo, a great slogan, and even a super cool mascot! Now we’re about to launch our fall after-school programs. All part of a day’s work as your Youth Programs Coordinator.

imageAt the heart of the maker movement is the idea that all students are creators. Instead of memorizing and regurgitating facts, Young Makers are encouraged to use their skills and what they know to solve problems while designing and building their own projects. We believe in embracing failure as part of the making process, and allowing Young Makers to take risks on the way to creating something great. Making promotes a growth mindset, enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and acts as a powerful force for inclusion. TTL Kids! is committed to ensuring that all Makers in the making have access to mentors, creative spaces, community, and tools.

While the TTL’s makerspace has a community unto itself, being part the Danforth East Community is very important to us. This summer, I might have met some of you while facilitating activities at the East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market. I loved working with your Young Makers to create D.I.Y. spin-art, build marshmallow catapults, fashion buttons, and craft little brush-bots. In the coming weeks, TTL Kids! will be bringing more engaging activities to the market. Look for our tutorials on making spectroscopes, balloon hovercrafts, and pocket LED flashlights! A big thank you to DECA for making space for us, and a great big thank you to all of you for supporting our efforts with youth programs so far!

Why not continue to inspire your Young Makers with a creative, hands-on after school program this fall? To celebrate the beginning of a new school year, we’re offering an early bird discount of 10% off the Youth Program of your choice. Use the code BACKTOSCHOOL10 at checkout before September 15th. Full descriptions of each program are available HERE.

It’s been a blast of a summer, and we can’t wait to meet our new and returning Young Makers this fall!

Activities galore!

Fall is that magical time of year when the leaves change, the days darken, and we all have to think about what kinds of activities we are going to undertake for the year. (If you are like me, you were frantically trying to sign up your kids for swimming lessons this morning at 7am!) Here are a few options in the neighbourhood…

East End Music Project
(non-profit music program for kids on Tuesdays)

create-community

Miranda from the East End Music Project sent this note along:

I run the East End Music Project (I do this out of LOVE as a volunteer), which is a very cool social purpose music school in the East End.

The project is taught by professional musicians and educators with instruction at a very high level. The social purpose part of it is that all the class fees are geared to income. Our focus is on collaboration and working together in the classes. It is a fabulous opportunity. I have a couple of spots available because I’ve hired more teachers to increase our capacity. We would love to have your families join us.

If you’ve ever thought about music lessons, this is a great way to get involved in a social purpose enterprise, support local musicians, and participate in something really special. Your kids will also get a stellar music experience. All classes are subsidized. No restrictions on who can apply! Check out www.eemp.ca to see what classes still have availability. Thanks!

Are you ready to sing?

Some locals, Sarah and Damaris, are starting a new choir and would like YOU to join! Registration form is here and some additional details are below.

Pegasus Studios

SO many classes, so little time. What can we say about Pegasus? It’s music, dance, art, choir, yoga – stuff for kids, adults, kids and adults together – if you don’t know about this neighbourhood institution, you should. www.pegasusstudios.com

Fitness

We have been so lucky to have so many new fitness-related businesses open up in this neighbourhood (coinciding nicely with the bakeries, ice cream shop and restaurants!). Here are some of them:

Fly Girl Fitness

Bomb Fitness

Ankh Yoga

Legacy Indoor Cycling

Counterbalance Studio Pilates

Career Fit Mom

Dragonz Martial Arts (adult and kid classes available)

Bell’s Martial Arts (adult and kid classes available)

Monarch Park Stadium (adult and kid classes/activities, running track)

One more thing….

Our next DECA Board meeting will be next Monday, September 21 starting at 7:30pm. If you’d like to join us, drop us a line here and we can let you know where we’re meeting. Last time we enjoyed an hour at the beginning to meet & greet, but this time we will get right to it a 7:30pm because we have a lot to cover. All are welcome!

Prom clothes donations needed and other news!

Donate prom clothes! April 17th deadline

This is a wonderful initiative and thanks to DECA member Diana Gibbs for sending this along:

The New Circles’ annual Prom Boutique Clothing Drive is now in high gear and they need your fancy clothes! The boutique is the largest in the city serving girls and boys and expects over 500 youth this year.  Working with schools across the city, the program ensures that the financial barriers do not prevent students participating in the big day.

In This Closet (1765 Danforth) is kindly offering to be a drop-off site for east-enders and will accept your donations until April 17th.   Don’t leave your fancy clothes to languish in your closet. Bring them to In This Closet and put them to work.  Let’s make sure all our graduating youth can celebrate this milestone event in style.

Looking for:

  • New or gently used suits, shirts, ties/bow-ties, shoes
  • New or gently used formal or cocktail dresses, shoes, evening bags and jewelry

Urgently needed:

  • Prom wear for young men
  • Prom wear for women in sizes 10 – 22
  • New make up and nail polish
  • New toiletries for men and women

Click here for more info on this project.
