Events and volunteer opportunities!

We are doing our best to keep up with the neighbourhood, but with jobs, kids, vacations and a relentless summer cold, we’ve been a bit behind! Here are a couple of events and volunteer opportunities to note!

First off, our dear friend, Board member, pop-up queen and all-around volunteer extraordinaire Catherine Porter is leaving us for a year abroad.  Here is her own column about her latest adventure to Senegal – we’ll miss you Cath!

Events:

Wheels on the Danforth – Saturday, August 10

It might not be on our section of Danforth, but there is a pretty fun-sounding event going on east of us that you should know about: Wheels on the Danforth.  Car show, kids zone, entertainment, craft fair, beer garden – all to raise money for the community!  Check out their website for more info: http://www.wheelsonthedanforth.ca

Movie Under the Stars @ East Lynn – August 22

We’ll remind you again, but mark you calendars with this year’s date for Movie Under the Stars at East Lynn Park. On August 22, come for the market and stay for the Princess Bride.  Bring your blankets, snacks and six-fingered friends for this family classic.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Monarch Park Adopt-a-Tree

In addition to DECA’s own adopt-a-tree program, (click here for our blog post about that) the Friends of Monarch Park have a program in Monarch Park and are looking for more volunteers.  Please visit http://friendsofmonarchpark.com/adopt-a-tree/ for more information.

Canada Day at Stan Wadlow

Did you attend this year’s festivities?  Were you waiting around for hours for the rides to get going? Did you think the rides were a bit rough around the edges?  DId the roller coaster operator keep your kids waiting while he walked around under the ride tightening all of the hitches with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth?  There were lots of great things about the event, but there’s definitely room for improvement – I mean, Canada’s birthday deserves nothing but the best!

A casual chat about it in passing with Janet Davis revealed that the organizing committee needs people on it.  If you are able to volunteer to add your 2 cents to the decisions that are made about East York Canada Day 2014, please email Councillor Davis by clicking here.  CIty money goes into this event, so it’s in all of our interest to make sure that it’s spent on top quality fun for our whole community!!

DECA

Since I’m writing about volunteer opportunities, I would be remiss if I didn’t put in a plug for DECA.  While people may think that we’re a well-oiled machine of neighbourhood do-gooding, (ha!) we are actually just regular neighbourhood volunteers, and we’re always looking for more help.  Do you have a great idea for our ‘hood? Let us know!  Email us here with your thoughts and we’ll figure out the next steps.

This week at the Market

August?  Really?  How did that happen?  Don’t despair – we have many weeks left of this gorgeous weather and this week’s lineup at the East Lynn Farmers’ Market will ensure that your Thursday will be spent in the park with all of your neighbours, soaking up every last ray of sunshine that the day has to offer.

Don’t forget that in addition to the beautiful fruit and veggies, there is prepared food on hand at the market (and ice cream!), so come to buy and plan to stay!

If you are bringing your furry babies – and this is the perfect week to bring them – please ensure that they stay on leash!

What’s on this week:

  • Mrs. Darling will be crafting with the kids and this week will be making wooden spoon bugs! (see photo below) 4:30-5:30 p.m.
  • Ontario Association of Vet Techs will be on hand chatting about dog safety
  • Canine Social Company (new local business) are offering $5 puppy manicures (nail clippings) to raise money for the Walk to End Canine Cancer
  • Merill Dog Park Association – come learn about this great neighbourhood doggie group
  • Enjoy the music of Guy Smagghe

Farmers’ Market & Pop-Up Shop Deal of the Week

We’re on vacation this week, so you’ll just have to excuse the combined market and pop-up shop posts.  Once you have a read, you’ll see that they actually fit quite well together.

Did you get to check out the T.O. Ceviche Bar last week?  If not, you’re in luck.  They had so much fun in our neighbourhood last week they’re coming back for more.  Lucky us!  Fish tacos, fish kabobs, sweat potato burgers!

This week will also feature celebrity chef Lynn Crawford!  She will be joining Primeridge Pure and making the cheesecake featured in the Ace Bakery cookbook using Stacey’s Grey Rush cream cheese. Stacey just had her baby, so I’m not sure whether we can expect to see her this week.  Congratulations Stacey & family!

And in more farmer news, everyone should test the fresh strawberry smoothies available from O.K. Farms.  Delicious and nutritious!

At 4:30 pm our Silly Goose Kids friends will be making ‘crafty bands’ picture bracelets for all those junior crafters.

Be sure to watch for the roving Yummy Stuff staff handing out free samples at the market this week. You’ll be able to spot them by their white aprons and the crowds of happy people around them. If you haven’t checked out our pop-up shop yet, Thursday is the perfect opportunity. Morag’s shop, right across from East Lynn park, will be open until 8 pm.

Don’t forget to send your best market pictures to events(at)danfortheastcommunityassociation.com.  We’ll repost all the picture at the end of the season and vote on a winner!

Finally, if you’ve seen those Stop Line 9 signs around and wondered what it was all about, come chat with organizers at the market this week.  They’ll be there with information on what is being planned for the oil pipeline and what their concerns are.

Farmers’ Market: Last Week & This Week

Well last week was a blast!  The Food Truck Festival was such a success.  So much so, they kinda ran out of food a bit early!  Thank you to all shoppers who came out to try the tasty treats and to the extra volunteers who made the day a success.  And apologies to those who showed up later and the selection was limited.

In farmer news, did you know there is a new vendor at the market with blueberries and flowers?  Now you do.  Also, the corn is simply amazing right now; another new farmer is selling locally grown harvested and created organic skin care products (From the Meadow); and check out the picture of the $10 mixed fruit basket.  A whole lot of reasons to go to the market this week!

This week, T.O. Ceviche Bar will offer a Ceviche Demo this week from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Their Creative Food Directors Alvaro Valencia and Sean Lacey will explain how to prepare ceviche using fish, lime juice, ginger, limo hot pepper, herbs and seasonal greens and fruits.  They’ll be coming with samples!   Bring your adventurous appetite for ceviche, gluten-free sweet potato and quinoa burgers (served on roti) and fish anticuchos (Peruvian kebab) at promotional prices.

If you’re looking for a fire extinguisher or carbon monoxide detector, stop by the community booth to learn more about fire prevention and safety and enter the draw.  There will be stuff for the kids too!

Finally, bring your adventurous little ones for the 4:30pm craft with Mrs. Darling.  This week she’ll be running some water gun painting!
