The Market this Week: A perfect forecast!

The weather report is calling for rain tonight but tomorrow afternoon should be all clear for your market shopping! Recent new additions include peaches!  I highly recommend the corn too.  Tawse Winery will be the local winery this week.

There are so many amazing volunteers that donate hours upon hours of time each year to make the market happen.  A reminder that we could use a few more volunteers to help the market manager with setting up and taking down the DECA tent and tables each week.  We’re also looking for people who might want to spend a few hours talking to neighbours at the DECA booth.  And there is one more date that we’re looking for a team of two volunteers to cook for the farmers.  If you or someone you know wants to become more involved in any capacity, please emails us at events(at)danfortheastcommunityassociation.com.

This week our community booth will be Save the Bees. Here’s a preview of what you can learn about from chatting with her:

Pollinators can be thanked for one out of every three bites of food we eat including most of the fruits and veggies found at farmers markets. You may have heard that bees are important pollinators and that they are in decline. What you may not know is that Danforth East resident Dr. Sheila Colla is one of North America’s native bee experts.  Her research documented the decline of the Rusty-patched Bumble bee, a formerly common species in southern Ontario, which was then listed as the first Endangered bee species in North America. Sheila has co-authored “The Bumble bees of North America- An Identification Guide“.  Sheila has helped launch a citizen science project (bumblebeewatch.org) to have people like you help her search for the elusive Rusty-patched using a smartphone or digital camera. Come learn about your native pollinators and what you can do to help them!

Local Beaches-East York MP Matthew Kellway will also be at the market to chat about local issues and events.

Capturing the Market Magic

Thank you to Stephen Rabjohn for volunteering to take some photographs at the market.  Here is a selection of his work:

This Week at the Market: Blueberries, Flowers and Kale!

Before we get to this week, let’s talk about how outstanding the market was last week. Seems like every Thursday we’ve seen perfect market weather and last week was no exception. There were many new additions to the market last week too, including new vendors with blueberries, flowers and an amazing selection of greens!  Thanks to Mary-Margaret McMahon for not only sponsoring the movie night, but spending hours popping popcorn for the Indiana Jones fans to enjoy while taking in the movie. We also had many contributions from local businesses and neighbours that made the Beach Party & Movie Night so successful – thank you to Silly Goose Kids, Ankh Yoga and Nicola St. John.
